We are going on a fairly long trip this coming weekend and thought this might be a good way to help pass the time more easily for her and make the trip more fun, especially since her brother will not be with us to give her someone to play with in the backseat (it's a girls weekend...it will be my mom, Evelyn, Lillian and myself going to visit my Aunt LInda.....Joshua and Daddy get to have a boy's weekend at home!!! ). The drive is a little over 3 hours both directions so I'm trying to come up with ideas to pass the time, so I thought an audio read-along book and some crayons & coloring books should help.

I know that there was a thread about this (audio books) awhile back and Julie shared an amazing list with us of some of the audio books she uses with her kiddos. I was wondering what titles might be age appropriate for my 5 yr. old dd?

My son just loved Is Your Mama a Llama? Actually, my 8 yo dd got quite a kick out of it too...

I can't think of the name, but there was also one about Anansi the spider getting stuck in a melon, then talking, and all the animals thought the melon was talking...the kids also liked that one a lot.

We're going to try some longer, more novel-type ones next, because I think my older ones would enjoy it while eating lunch. It's been a real hit at our house so far!

Just wanted to add that Stone Soup is another one that both my dd and younger ds really enjoyed.

I took along several audio books when I took my kids to Atlanta to visit my sister's family this summer. (Me and the 3 kids in the van for 15 hours!! ) My oldest son especially probably could have talked for about the whole 15 hours...so it was nice for us to have time when his attention was focused on listening (and he wasn't talking ). We all liked listening...and everyone was quiet. The Boxcar Children was one of our favorites from that trip. We also listened to 3 Classical Kids CD's. These have ficticious stories about kids that interacted with great composers. They have music with them (in the background). We listened to Beethoven Lives Upstairs, Vivaldi's Ring of Mystery, and Hallelujah Handel. On the trip we just took to Colorado, we checked out the Chronicles of Narnia from our library and got through 3 of them.

My son has been loving the Magic Tree House books on CD. Our library has them for loan and he has listened to all they have many times. They also love Winnie the Pooh on CD.

Some of these titles are used in Beyond and Bigger as read-alouds, but I'm just giving ideas of books that are worth listening to more than one time.
