Hello everyone! This is my first week homeschooling and we are using LHFHG. I have a few questions. With the History.. are we supposed to do the questions and the projects in the book or just do the reading? I haven't recieved my Do it Carefully stuff yet so we are doing handwriting daily. My son is VERY bored w/any handwriting. He can write all of his letters pretty well really already. I was thinking about having him write with more of a purpose like writing letters to Aunts and Grandma's ect. I think that will help. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Then Math.. my son (5 yrs old) already was doing basic addition, subtraction, recognizes his numbers and writes them fine. So this math so far isn't very good for him. I am considering jumping into the next book Singapore 2B. Has anyone else done this? I just don't want to waste time going over stuff he knows already and boring him. My kids LOVE Reddy Fox and beg me to read more chapters every day. And the memory verse.. I am so excited! For the first time ever they are memorizing them and so am I! I have always struggled with memorizing verses. So that is exciting. Overall I am loving LHFHG! I love it that everything is mapped out for me! I originally was trying to set aside 2 hours a day to dedicate to school but my baby had other plans LOL. So now we are just doing it at different times throughout the day and that seems to work best for now. Thanks Carrie for making homeschool possible for us!!
Thanks-

My first week using LHFHG and I have questions??
Re: My first week using LHFHG and I have questions??
Let's see if I can help with your questions.
We are quickly reviewing the handwriting K (we use A Reason for Handwriting) and then we'll move into the next book which has them writing out a verse onto a poster paper each week which you can then color and hang up or send to someone.
For math, we do a few of the fun sounding activities now and then. (I did buy the workbook) But for the most part, we use MUS Primer (Math-U-See) which is definitely more at my DD's level and interest. We start the adding and subtracting next week in this program. I'm sure others will tell you how much they like the math that Carrie picked. (I'm sure I would have used it if we had only done HOD products from the beginning) But MUS is a much better fit for our family.
I don't know if that helps you at all.

Re: My first week using LHFHG and I have questions??
Jennifer I think you will be fine either way with the questions. We do all the questions. I just like all of it that is there but I think if you are pressed for time you would be fine to just go with the questions that are in the LHFHG guide book. On the math I think if he is ready for the upper level go for it. But I would definitely try some things further in the book though first. My six year old was just eating it up and doing it all super quick and then all of a sudden the thinking just got a little deeper and it slowed her down to normal speed. It kind of makes some jumps so I might more consider just going up one half level rather than a complete level. But if you are on 2A then of course that would be 2B if you are on 1B I might consider 2A as the next level to go. It makes little jumps here and there that eventually slows the ones that are eating up down and even when it is more on the simple side for them I am finding it is teaching them deep thinking along the way.
We are doing LHFHG too and are just loving it. So glad you found it is working great for you too!

Re: My first week using LHFHG and I have questions??
Jennifer,
You may want to think about doing "A Reason for Writing 'A' which does writing of Bible verses to give to others. It sounds like the 'K' level is much too easy for your little one. Here's the link to that book on our site: http://www.heartofdakota.com/handwriting-k-a.php
Also, you'll most likely want to give the Singapore placement test to find the correct level of Singapore placement. Then, you'll know which level your little one needs to be in. Here's the link to the placement test: http://www.singaporemath.com/Placement_s/12.htm
It really helps to do Singapore math with the activities in the guide if you can, as they really cement the concepts. Singapore gets tough quickly enough, so you'll want to be careful about rushing ahead.
Just a few things that may help tweak your choices to get the "best fit". Otherwise, it sounds like you're doing great!
Blessings,
Carrie
