Good books for your kids

Hello,
I wanted to know if any of you ladies have read or are familiar with the "Boxcar Children" Early Readers Set. I found them for a great price and want to know if they are wholesome books, teaching good biblical/moral value. My son is soon becoming an emergent reader and he loves adventure and fun stories. I am not familiar with these books and I don't want to get books that teach your kids bad attitudes. (We don't watch any TV and are very picky with movies).
If they are not wholesome books, please let me know if you have found some wholesome books for emergent readers that are fun and teach biblical/moral value.
Thank you.

Wish I could be more helpful, but I will say that I read them as a child and LOVED them. However that being said, that was 20 (maybe more

) years ago and I don't remember much except that I greatly enjoyed them. I mean I remember the basic story line (of the first book anyway), but not if it was moral and wholesome.
I'm sure that someone will be able to better tell you if they are wholesome...sorry I wasn't much help.

I have actually only read a couple of them myself...a long time ago. However, my son enjoys them...he first got stsrted reading them when he was in a private Christian school because his teacher read one out loud to the class. So, not a personal recommendation, but if they were allowed to read them to the kids, I would say they're probably safe. Hopefully, someone with experience with them will offer their 2 cents.

I just wanted to add that The American Adventure series, by Barbour Publishing is an excellent series of 48 books about events from the Pilgrims all the way to World War II (I think). It is very much centered on their beliefs as Christians and making the right choices in light of that...so, those may be something to try. They are out of print and hard to come by, though. I came across some at the Goodwill store (before I knew what a great deal I had gotten!) and then found the entire set at our used curriculum sale in the spring...a true answer from God as I had not been able to win a bid for them on Ebay. You may find some listed there for sale, and I have found one or two at CBD....that is my suggestion. We read them aloud and the kids LOVE them!

Hi,
I am familiar with the boxcar children. I read them as a girl and now my girls are reading them. They are not "Christian" but the children have good attitudes, are respectful to adults and love to help others. The first books tells that their parents died and they are running away from a grandfather they had never met because they thought he wouldn't like them and might separate them. They live in a boxcar and show responsibility, at the end they meet their grandfather, love him and go to live with him, the rest of the series tells of their adventures. The first 19 were written back in the 60's/70's (the one's I had read) and the rest in the 90's? I read a bunch of the newer ones before I would hand them over to my daughter and I was pleasantly surprised to find that even the newer ones keep the good attitudes and morals. They do do a lot of adventures on their own (the 4 children together)but with the permission from their grandfather in fact he is usually the instigator. I don't think you would find much wrong with them.

Thank you so much for your great input. I think I will get them and I will be on the look out for the other series that is out of print.

I'm incredibly picky with my daughter and we've read a bunch of the originals out loud (she's not quite 5 yet). The children are incredibly respectful to adults and responsible and C and I have had some great conversation from these books.

Ditto - we enjoyed the Boxcar series as well!

I just found a great series called "Today's Heroes". I'm still going through them to be sure about them, but so far, they're very Christian and such an encouragement! Here's a link to one of them about Ben Carson...
