I wanted to introduce our family, since we are new here!
My husband and I have 5 children-3 have graduated and the last two are ages 12 1/2 and 9.
Both of the youngest are special needs...the oldest of the two is Dylan and he has Down syndrome.
Our youngest, Caleb, has Trisomy 9p, a less common chromosome disorder. They are both pretty high functioning
and the youngest goes to a private school and has a one- to- one aid part time. I only have Dylan at home
with me this year and we are going to use Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory. Of course I am interested to
know if anyone is using/has used this with their special needs children and how it worked or how they might
have modified the curriculum. I have actually been looking at this curriculum for a couple of years and felt
led to use it this year! The setup seems very user friendly which is a big help to me.
By the way, we have mostly homeschooled all of our children, but did have them in a private christian school
for a few years. I am looking forward to being part of this board when i can be! :)

palmom,

I just wanted to welcome you to the board! We're glad to have you here! I'll also move your introduction over to the main board, since more moms will see it there. All new posts begin on the main board.

We'll be looking forward to getting to know you better! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Welcome to HOD. I think the're several Mom's on the board that have used Hod with special needs children. Not sure I remember any one having Downs though. I bet someone will pipe up with some good advice. Meanwhile I just wanted to say welcome and I am saying a prayer that HOD and this board will be a blessing to your family.

palmom Welcome! :D I think you are going to be very happy with your choice of HOD especially for a child with special needs. I happen to have one child with special needs. She is soon to be 11 and has cerebral palsy. She is moderate to mild for CP. Her IQ is in the normal range but is reading delayed and somewhat math delayed as well. She has some other areas she struggles with as well. HOD has been wonderful for her. She is about ready for Beyond now. I have her with her 3 other siblings in Bigger but do he emerging readers and this year will be using the LA portion of Beyond quite a bit. Beyond would be a good fit for her but she is able to do Bigger for the most part. HOD is so flexible and able to be customized for your individual child's need and your over all family need. You will love it! And I think you will find the Charlotte Mason ways will work well for your son's learning.I have spoken with several moms that have high functioning children with Downs and I have found actually we have similarities in the way our children learn. So I am guessing you will be very happy with ow HOD works for your son.

Welcome and can't wait to hear how things work for you. I think it will be great! :D

It's nice to meet you. I have a niece with Down Syndrome, I thought about using LHTH with her when she was visiting this summer. I think Carrie's programs would work very well with your son. If he is anything like my niece, the music and artistic elements will captivate him. My niece is a music lover and picks up anything set to music. You can break the programs up any way you need too and take breaks in between to do other activities if he has a shorter attention span. There is a wide range of activities scheduled. If he places in Beyond in the placement chart, then it should be a good fit, the chart does a good job at helping you pick the right level.

Welcome to the board! I help Carrie out in the HOD booths at conventions, and I had the pleasure of meeting a 12 yo gal with downs this past year. She was so excited to do Little Hearts for His Glory! It was a gift from God for me to be able to share in her excitement. Her mom let her choose which Bible for the Emerging Reader's Set, which handwriting, which fine motors skills book - she knew just what she wanted. She honestly could not wait to start! :) She'd done Little Hands to Heaven the year before and was all ready to start Little Hearts... As she was leaving she lovingly stroked her hand over the Beyond Little Hearts... guide cover and peeked inside... then she looked up at me with shining eyes and smiled with a smile that was a picture of heaven itself and said..."Next year... I'll get to do this one!" :D It made my heart sing. I've also spoken with other moms using HOD for their children with downs. I think you'd be happy with it! :D :D :D

In Christ,
Julie
