Trying to decide- need some advice

Post by VickiW » Wed Aug 13, 2008 4:26 pm

I am trying to decide on HOD, Sonlight or My Fathers World. I would love to hear from someone who has used/seen both the benefits of HOD over the others. Other than price, what are the benefits to HOD. It looks fabulous, I am just over analyizing :)

I used Sonlight for part of one year...I ended up returning it because I found it confusing and difficut to implement. Maybe it was just me? It had wonderful literature selections..I just couldn't understand the guide.

I never used MFW, but I did look at a friend's guide and felt the same way I did with Sonlight..CONFUSED! I think it's the flipping back and forth to find what I need.

HOD is very easy to understand. The plans are all laid out for each day, and any poetry, spelling words, or list of books needed are in the Appendix. There is great flexibility and it is easy to combine children as the guides are written for an age range instead of a particular 'grade'. There are also extension packs available starting with the Bigger...guide, so that makes it even easier to combine kiddos. There are several options on the site to choose from for what to purchase, so you can get the most economical package and utilize your library...or buy all you need and have it right on hand for your convenience. AND, these message boards are a wonderful place to glean advice from all those who use HOD as well as the author (Carrie) who is also currently using HOD with her own boys. I don't think it can get much better than that!

Hi VickiW!

I think the post about Bible comparison between HOD and MFW will help clear up some of your questions. I looked at Sonlight, MFW, and TOG (plenty of others too...), and they all look too time consuming to me. Since I haven't used any of them, I'm probably not a good judge, but I just know that if you want an organized, doable day, HOD is the one that has it all! The guide just makes plain sense, and Carrie has put so much thought, prayer and work into it. You will see it in her writing, and your family will be blessed because of it.

There have been so many posts about comparing these curricula. I'm not good at posting links, but just try a search, and it should yield plenty of threads about this subject.

I think the best analogy about HOD that I can think of was posted by MamaMary when she said something along the lines of Carrie helping us to eat an elephant, one bite at at time. It works, and you will see the fruits of the program.
Moving along at our own pace, and very happy with it!

VickiW,

Here's a couple of threads running on the board right now that may help you:

We'll pray for peace with your curriculum decisions. I'm sure more ladies will chime in with their advice.

Blessings,
Carrie
