Dictation not finished

Hi ladies, I can't remember if I've read something about this topic before. My ds has been struggling with dictation this year. Spelling has always been a weak point for him. Last year, when we did Preparing with him, he breezed through dictation level 3. I felt it was too easy for him but we completed it anyway. This year we have done dictation level 4 and it has been difficult for him. Anyway, here we are on week 33 in CTC, we are about to take a break for summer and he is only on dictation #74. So my questions is this: do I need to have him finish his dictation the rest of the summer so we can start with dictation level 5 when we start R to R in the fall? Or do we drop it for the summer and let him pick up where he left off in the fall?

Pick up where he left off! They have through high school to get through level 8 I think. So he has time.

Yes, definitely pick it up where you left off. Especially if he struggled, skipping would only compound that problem, but even if he didn't struggle. It's skill-based so, like math, you should finish one level before starting the next. Dictation is a marathon, not a sprint! ;)

Blessings,
