New homeschooler w/ lots of fears

Hi All,
My first son will be 5 next October so if we started Kindergarten next August he would obviously be 2 months from being 5. I do feel that he will be ready for LHFHG but here is a struggle I'm having... I was a public school kid so while I love Charlotte Mason style, that public school kid in me looks at the laid back teaching and feels a bit panicked. I keep thinking surely he will have "holes" in his education and everything won't get covered. My husband frequently reminds me that although we were both public school educated, we have "holes" ourselves. I need that reminder!! Anyway my question is, would the laid back teaching likely be exactly what he needs for his first year seeing as he will be on the young end of LHFHG? The phonics is what worries me most honestly. I fear if I don't have some rigorous phonics curriculum then he will not actually learn to read. Did I mention my fears and apprehension?? LOL Breaking out of traditional school thinking is tough and I guess I'm just needing some reassurance from moms who are farther down the road and have maybe shared some of these sames thoughts and concerns. Thanks is advance!!
