Hello!

I'm Laurie, mom of two, and another on the way. DS, Levi, age 6 (7 next month); DD, Hannah, age 4; and a new little blessing due the day after Christmas. Wife to DH, Chris. I guess I need to put that in my signature :P since this is my first post I haven't needed a sig yet. I've been lurking here for a couple months now, I have really learned a lot from you ladies, thank you so much for this board. I am so happy to have found HOD, and I haven't even ordered it yet  I was doing some searching on Homeschool Curriculums on a budget, and Google pointed me to a post by someone in another board who had suggested HOD~which I had never heard of.

As soon as I got here and started reading around what the programs included, so full of God and Love and Innocence and History, my heart just leapt with joy! I just knew this was going to be such a good year for my son and I. Last year was our first year Homeschooling, and we did Abeka. We did Abeka because the private school that I was pulling him out of (he went to Kindergarten there, and had done 2 weeks of first grade) used Abeka and I had no idea where to start. It was so intensive of a program that we ended up weeding out all the fun stuff and focused soley on the 3 R's, aside from an occasional nature walk for science. I love that HOD focuses so much on History (I have always loved history) and reading, I know that learning and teaching will be so much more pleasurable this year~~more like quality time, and not like chore time 8)

So far I've been able to search this board and find the answer to each of my gazillion questions that have now led me to knowing which program is best for us (Beyond). I have had the hardest time figuring out what math my son places at, some of the things in Singapore 2a were already covered in Abeka 1st grade, and some of the things in Singapore 1b were not covered by abeka 1st grade. But Lo! and Behold! I found this post by Carrie in the archive:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=152
Basically here she is saying that she used Beyond with her son for 2nd grade and she did Singapore 1B and 2A that year. Well, that would work just right!

Unfortunately, I can't order it that way from HOD, I've checked in the store and I am only allowed to order 1a and 1b together or 2a and 2b together. So I need to either order 1b and 2a from another source (like singapore or amazon) OR I was thinking I could order the basic pack with 2a and 2b to use 2b in the future and get 1b from another source. I'm trying to do this as inexpensively as possible, of course.

My question is about what exactly is in the Beyond program for Math. ie: do I need to get the textbook and the workbook for 2a if I have the Beyond book...or just the workbook? What about the teachers guide? I know it is supposed to have the alternate schedule for 2a and 2b in the appendix, but does that mean the teacher's guide and or textbook stuff too?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Blessings! Laurie

My thoughts exactly!! :D Welcome Laurie - you're going to love HOD! :D :D I actually started with my ds today and it was just great!

About your math question...I'm quite sure that if you e-mail Mike & Carrie that they can get you the math books you need in the package. They're so accomodating!

Now about the Carrie's math activities...the ones for 1B are in the Beyond guide, but to get the ones for 2A you'll have to order the Bigger guide. They're a lot of fun and very helpful in getting the concepts, so I highly reccommend doing that (maybe when you get half way through the year or something). We finished Saxon 2 this spring and had covered most of Singapore 2A..but there were a few holes, so we went through most of it over the summer. We'll be doing 2B and 3A this year. I won't need the Preparing guide though because 2A and 2B are the last levels where Carrie does the hands-on activities. Then it switches to using the textbook along with the workbook.

Just so you know, the next time you post you'll want to do it on the Main Board as that's where new posts start (and most moms only look there)...but I'm sure Carrie will move this so everyone else can welcome you and help you out! :D

Oh that's such a good idea! I'll probably be wanting to do "bigger" next year anyway, and I'll certainly know for sure after we've started "beyond" and then I will know exactly what I need to keep going also. Here I am trying to plan the whole year in advance

Silly me, I did notice after I posted that there were only a handful of posts here, I just assumed posting it here made sense~~but not if nobody looks here! I'll see if I can send a message to Carrie to move it for me. Thanks a lot for your advice Kathleen

Laurie,

Welcome to HOD! We're glad to have you here! :D I'll gladly move your post over to the main board so more moms can see it.

Also, as far as the math, you can order the books separately, as you can order all items at HOD individually, so just give us a call with what you need and we'll take care of it. :D We list the items in packages so that there isn't a lot of confusion to moms of young ones as to what they need. Once you get to Preparing, all math sets are listed separately on the website.

Blessings,
Carrie
