To "say" or not to "say"?

About Writing.I purchased a book published by Scholastic called "Banish Boring Words". It is awesome! It gives like 5 pages of words to use INSTEAD of "said" or "nice". But, I think my kids are getting carried away with it. Their writing almost sounds weird now. Everyone "exclaims", "mutters", "questions", "groans", "replies", "utters"...you get the drift. What do I do without letting the "said" monster back out again?

It is common when children learn a new "dress-up" for their writing to over use it. But with time, it will diminish. And some new technique will take its place

I agree with marybeth33, that in time it will diminish. It may sound weird, but in scholarly writing it won't sound weird. It is what professors, ACT graders etc will be looking for. I would be thrilled they learned the lesson so well.
