Do we need Storytime and DITHOR?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Storytime with my children but some days it seems to fall to the last thing on the list of our school. I just let older ds, who will be in Rev to Rev, read them on his own though I know this is not the point of the Storytime block. For younger ds who will be in Preparing this year I think he still needs this as he has missed out on a lot of this over the years, (guilt, guilt) but things happen sometimes out of our control. I remember reading about this topic before in regards to Storytime and DITHOR but have not been able to find it again yet. Could someone refresh my memory? In the past we have tried reading at night but then we miss some of the discussion. Reading at meal time just leads to a delayed momma after lunch because I am finishing eating and trying to move on to something else. Can we use the Storytime books for DITHOR as well, though I am not seeing an easy fit for this beyond history related stories?

Thanks for your help.

We do both because it's our favorite thing to do, read together. If I were to drop one it would be Storytime. I often don't do the discussion with Storytime. I think the discussion with the talk about story elements and such is more important to make sure you complete BEFORE they start doing DITHOR because it's a good intro to those concepts and also to narration. By the time you start DITHOR there are also other narrations happening and DITHOR covers many of the topics. I found the activities in CTC really fun so we did those with the storytime. In Res to Ref it actually says they can do Storytime on their own, so I wouldn't think it would be a bad thing in Rev to Rev. I may have my daughter take it over when she gets to Rev to Rev.

They really do serve different purposes and work on different skills. DITHOR should be books at or slightly below their reading level since they are doing the reading. When you read something yourself and then have to do follow up activities that takes a different part of your brain then when you listen and process the information as in storytime. The storytime books are often above the reading level of the guide, at least they are up until RTR. As was mentioned above the guide actually says that in Rev to Rev they can read their own storytime, so that is fine for your dc to do that.

Yes, I do think both are needed, for different reasons. Here's a relevant post by Carrie about this...
