Is this a strange idea?

I got to thinking I want to start the new year next week. Nope not strange yet. We are going away Sept 8, for week at the shore, we will have a ocean front house and will be spend a ton of time on the beach. I was thinking of doing HOD 4 days a week and on the fifth day work on an ocean lapbook. The boys love doing lapbooks. I was wondering if there is anyone who works in a four day week and how they work it?

I don't think that's strange at all. I plan to do a 4-day schedule because we will be involved in our co-op on Fridays in the fall. I just plan to add a box (or so) each day to get it all in within one week. Or, I may decide to just do 4 days a week, and end our Unit on each Monday. I've got to look at the schedule to see what is possible for us. I know there are others who've done this, and I think the manuals will be on a 4-day schedule anyway beginning with
Preparing... HOD is very flexible, so I think you should do what works best for your family...it's awesome that you can study the ocean while on vacation
at the ocean! Have fun with it.

nope, not strange at all.

We are looking at a 3 day week this year due to Tuesday co-op and Thursday Community Bible Study. I hope to get a few boxes done on those days, but I know that won't happen every time. I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to plan around it yet. I may try to do a couple of extra boxes on M/W/F and do a few boxes on T/Th so that we get at least a 4 day week in, but I'm not sure. I'm just starting to figure out fall schedules.

I'm also planning a 4-day week this year. We're going to leave Friday for some extra things that we won't get to on "normal" days like nature hikes and nature journaling, some extra art, composer study (although we already listened to several of the composer CD's we got for the year during our 30+ hrs in the van this month!), etc... We're kind of going to see how things fall into place to see if we consistently do the 4-day week or do some 5-day weeks. I LOVE that we can be flexible!!!

I think your ocean lapbook sounds like a great idea and will be perfect with the beginning of Bigger and your trip to the ocean!

We'll be doing a 4 day week this year. We are doing 4 days HOD and then one day a week Bible and nature study. Our plan is to finish up reading the OT. We will do some reading during the 4 days but the fifth day is catch up and digging deeper. I am looking forward to it. I will not sell it to the kids as 4 days though

and I will count the fifth day as school because we will do a full day. I am really looking forward to it. And it sets things up for the programs to come. So to me your idea sounds great!

We studied the ocean when we were there last October right before we started beyond.
We took the One small square ocean book with us. Look it over before you go it is full of experiments and fun things to do. but you need some stuff you might not think to pack. (We even got to see a ghost crab up close and personal, thanks goodness those boys {homeschooled] caught it in a jar..)

Don't forget to read The Seashore Book by Charlotte Zolotow while you're there! You might want to also read NIght of the Moonjellies by Mark Shasha too! Those are my suggestions for a week at the beach. Have fun!
