How to Start off at 1/2 Speed??

Post by HSMom03 » Sun Aug 30, 2015 11:35 am

If I want to start BEYOND at half speed, would I just do the left side of the guide on DAY 1 and then the right side of the guide on DAY 2 for the first two weeks or so of school? Then start doing both sides each day?

Hi! I haven't done half speed yet, but plan to start Bigger that way in a few weeks. Not sure yet how we'll do it. Here is a post I bookmarked about this topic. From what I remember reading, people do half speed for varying lengths of time--from a few weeks to a few months--and then start full-speed when they feel their child is ready. Hope this helps!

Doing like that works, but it means a lot of seat time for the right side and not much for the left side. I would personally split the math and language arts up as well as maybe the reading and storytime. Then split the left side depending on the activity in the rotating box. Beyond only take at most 2 hours a day at full speed, so most families can get there very quickly. Bigger is where the guides have a lot more in them and half speed is really helpful in the beginning.

The most common way I have seen is to split L and R side. But obviously you can do them as you like. I think it is helpful to keep boxes that are connected to one another on the same day, but then again it would be a good reminder to have an activity the next day reminding you of your history story. Most often the rotating box connects somehow to the history reading.

Some people do math and copywork every day when doing 1/2 speed. This may help by reducing the amount of copywork needed to be done each day. Copywork is one of the "hard" things in Beyond and many kids do not like it much at first, so it is good to take it slowly.

Hi there! We have done half-speed BHFHG before and enjoyed it very much! Here is a link that may help you decide how you want to approach half-speed...

Here is another link that talks about doing PHFHG half-speed, which is similar to BHFHG...
