using the extension pkg to replace the basic package

My son will be starting the Revival to Revolution this next fall. He will turn 13 in Aug. and be going into the 8th grade. Can he choose to use the books in the extension pkg instead of the basic package? If so, is there a reading schedule for the extension package?
