Portuguese is my first language. Since my husband doesn’t speak Portuguese, we only speak English at home. I regret this decision. They still want to learn. It’s just harder now because whenever they don’t understand, they speak to me in English. Looking forward to High School years, I’d like for Portuguese to be their FL instead of Spanish. I am unsure about selecting materials from foreign publishers, in case it’s not considered credit worthy. Ultimately, learning the language is what matters most to me, but I am also looking to fulfill that credit.

Normally, if you log the time spent, that is enough to earn credit. DuoLingo and Rosetta Stone both offer Portuguese, so they might be good options.

Thanks, StephanieU! We’re using those right now. I ran into trouble verifying equivalency of the material with my own high school transcript when I moved to the US. I found a Portuguese class @ MIT Open courses that I think it will work.

Are your children dual citizens? I ask b/c my friend from Belgium can get her children (dual citizens), curriculum from there for free and enroll them in courses b/c of the dual citizenship. It may be something available to you and your kids for your native country and language.

They are not dual citizens, neither am I. I could have requested up to the age of 12, but I didn’t. Since I don’t want to ask for my daughter and not for him, I probably won’t. It was a lot of paperwork and fees involved.... Its not hard for Americans to obtain a visa to go to Brazil.

Hi Karla! That’s an unexpected surprise! Glad I posted! I am from Brazil. You? Please, if you come up with anything else, please share. I like what I see so far in the MIT open course for Portuguese. My goal is to finish Rosetta Stone and Duolingo before fall 2016. They will talk with my parents via Skype as well. Keep it up with Portuguese when they are still small. Biggest regret!

Wow, its been a year since I last posted? Sorry, I did not see your response! Yes, I'm from Brazil!! I have tried Duolingo but they lost interest quickly. We are now doing Rosetta Stone and they are enjoying it? What are your kids ages? Mine are now 10,8,5 and 3.
