Emerging Reader Question

I will have a just turned 7 year old starting Beyond after finishing LHFHG with 1st grade options. LHFHG has been a great year and I am looking forward to Beyond now!

I am a little confused about what this next year will look like with the book sets. My currently not yet 7 year old is a competent reader and I think the ER set, based on today, would be books a little below her level at the beginning and above her current level at the end. So...

From what I have read here, it looks like the recommendation is to do the ER set for a 2nd grader, but I also see DITHOR listed with a 2/3 set. I also just read the post saying that the Beginner Bible with the ER set takes 9 units to complete and that made me wonder about what the entire year would look like.

Could you all tell me how long the ER schedule takes to complete if you follow it? Is it x pages or chapters per day like the Burgess books are scheduled in LHFHG? Is DITHOR separate from the ER set or does it follow the ER set? Would she also start DITHOR during Beyond, or would that be something for the following year?

Thank you all so much for your help. It is always appreciated!

The schedule for the emerging readers covers a full year with reading. There are page numbers for each day as well as questions for you to ask based on Bloom's Taxonomy. There are also supplemental titles you can use to include more reading each day or spread out the emerging readers if necessary. Your would not start DITHOR until the next year (Bigger) at the earliest. Many families just do the books from DITHOR with 2nd-3rd graders and wait to start the DITHOR workbook until Preparing, so there is no rush to get through the emerging reader books.

You could also start her where she lands in the ERs. Some people skip to towards the middle if their child is an advanced reader. However to get more out of the questions it's better to have the books be easier for them to physically read.

Level 2 DITHOR is not second grade reading level. It's 3rd to 4th grade reading level. You would want those books to be easy for her to read so that she can spend more time thinking about the content rather than the actual words.

That clears up several things for me. I did think the DITHOR 2/3 was suggesting 2nd and 3rd grade.
So, if I am understanding correctly, I will be reading the daily read alouds to her based on the book pack we choose and the schedule in the guide, and she will be reading the ER books to me based on the ER schedule in the appendix of Beyond? And then, perhaps the year following Beyond, choose DITHOR 2/3.

And, am I correct that the ER schedule is not tied to anything else, so I can start it whenever we choose? As in, not necessarily the same time I start the guide?

Thank you both so much!

You are correct. We started the ER books half way through LHFHG and finished a few weeks ago. We loved all of the books! A few times we added in supplemental titles to give my daughter time to mature in her reading before moving on.
We will do DITHOR Level 2 mostly without the workbook in Bigger, maybe doing 1-2 genres with the workbook at the end. That way, if we do DITHOR as scheduled in Preparing-MtMM, we will have time to finish all 3 workbooks.
