Extension book suggestions? (Preparing)

This is our first year with HOD and my 13yo son is in Preparing with Extensions. In our last curriculum, though, we already did a number of Aesop's Fables so I don't want to assign those to him again. I am looking for a replacement for that but am having trouble since it is not something that fits with the historical time period like most other Extension books.
I've had The Children's Book of Virtues and By the Great Horn Spoon suggested but I don't own them and I can't get them from our library. (And I don't think I want to buy a book we'll only use once - I don't think anyone in our family will use Extensions after him).
I've already substituted More Stories in Grandma's Attic for the Aesop's Fables scheduled in story time. He LOVED it! Are the rest in the series worth getting?
I'm going to give him McBroom's Wonderful One-Acre Farm (DITHOR 2 - Folk Tales) for the next 3 days but it's way below his level and won't complete the number of assignments to replace Aesop. Is there a book or two from Bigger (not Extensions) that would be a good replacement, since he missed all of those books? Should I be looking for a specific genre or is there historical significance to Aesop's Fables?
Thanks in advance for all suggestions!
Blessings,
