Question about Singapore

Post by Jennifer » Tue Jul 15, 2008 7:48 am

I have a question about Singapore. I would be using 1A and 1B with BLHGHG. Does Singapore introduce addition and subtraction in families? I am use to Abeka which is a spiral approach, so I am a little nervous. I keep reading reviews that say Singapore is too much mental work, for advanced students and so on. Could someone please help? I do know I would also do lots of practice outside the workbooks and may even order a extra practice book. I just want to be sure that if we ever have to do a standardized test he will be on target. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jennifer,

Yes, it does. I want to share with you something I learned just this year. I had a hard time switching to Singapore because the program we use was doing an excellent job. (Time4Learning)

My oldest son (11th) is being tutored and the teacher only uses Singapore. I was SHOCKED to see how far she took him back?! She told me it's better to go back and review, to practice learning the new skills of mental math at a level they feel comfortable. So I did that! I have now taken all four of my boys back in Singapore and I'm allowing them to learn how to think about math differently in a level that they feel comfortable in.

The tutor also shared with me that she has children finish the 6th grade singapore book and test out fine for math at our local college. That's how good a program it is. She also said I had to change my thinking. I liked giving them pages, they did them, we moved on. But the activities that Carrie includes are vital to help your child not just do it because we said so, but to understand at a depth I was never taught. I hope my discoveries help you :D

Thanks Mary!! That info was very helpful to me. I am switching to Singapore this year as well from another program. I think my dd will enjoy math much more using the fun activites Carrie has written in Beyond. It's nice to know what a solid program it is . Thanks for sharing! :D
