Can you give me an idea about what your child's travel logs look like in CTC. What so they usually entail? How long do they tend to be? How do you prompt them? Thanks!

I use the log with lines only. I don't allow my dd to draw any pictures because she is quite an artist and that will make this assignment take 2-3 hours! Yes, I am mean... I know :-) Don't care LOL :-)

So anyway, when we first started doing these at the beginning of the year, my dd really struggled. What I let her do for all of Turkey was to pick different pictures from the book and copy down a sentence or two from the picture caption. She was very stressed out when we first started because she couldn't remember EVERYTHING that I read about. This approach calmed her down and me too. And I would set a timer for 20 minutes and she would try and notes from at least 4 different pictures (that is 5 minutes per picture). Once we moved to the next country, Israel, she gained some confidence and began writing things out on her own. I had her look back through the Field Note questions and she would answer a few questions in complete sentences on the log form. At this point, she was still using the pictures throughout the chapter to figure out what to say. But she was at least generating her own verbage rather than copying the text verbatim. And I still her set a timer for 20 minutes. The only new requirement she had was to answer questions from each field notes page and to focus on at least 2 different bolded sections for each field note (that is 4 questions total and will have all different kinds of info.) Currently we are finishing up the 3rd section, Egypt, and she will fill up all 5 sections on the travel log and is done long before the time goes off. I don't really watch her any more and she doesn't ask me questions either. But her assignments are done well and complete so I am happy with that. I think she has recently started scanning the text for answers as well because she is including more information than what is included in the picture captions.

One of Jayden's strengths is geography... her other is history. So because she tended to remember everything, I just made her write down 3-5 bullet points of interesting things. I let her look through the book, but she never really needed to.
