Bigger Bible Study

I am wondering if I am doing Bible Study in Bigger incorrectly. It is day 5 of each unit. I am in Unit 18. So if I am doing it incorrectly, I will have time to fix it. My daughter has made tremendous progress so far with her language and attention so perhaps it is the final hurdle. It only affects Bible reading. I read from the Bible and then ask the question. So, I read 1 Samuel 20:16-17 and then ask the question. The answer will be correct 75% of the time. When I read the entire passage and then read the question, the correct response rate was 0%. I could read through the entire passage, and then re-read each passage the question is in. I am just not certain what skill is being taught. Is it the habit of attention? I am very encouraged that she knows the stories from all our time in the Bible and DVD series of Bible stories. Sometimes her answer is from what she has seen on the DVD, and not exactly as written in what I just read. Otherwise, Bigger is an easy guide to complete with the right amount of challenge. We love Bigger!

We are only on unit 5 in Bigger, but I see a similar situation with my daughter. But, she has some processing difficulties to begin with. She does not pick up on certain things in a longer passage, so with some questions I need to re-read some verses. Then she will usually get it. It's not only with Bible. It is with much of what we read. Sometimes I think she is not paying attention, but I don't believe that is always the case. I know I need to stretch her, but I know that a lot of information at once is sometimes frustrating for her. If I read too fast, she does not always pick up on certain parts of the story. I know she likes pictures, but sometimes I think pictures distract her from what is being read. She was watching Little House on the Prairie the other day and in the middle of it she asked what was going on. I told her if she would listen to what they were saying, she would know what was going on. So, I think she is concentrating on the pictures and doesn't pick up some details. I need to limit video. Sorry I got off the Bible topic, but the attention issue carries into all all areas. I am very happy with Bigger. :D Yesterday, my daughter said she 'loves' school. She said it was for another reason, but I think it is because our day has been greatoing so smoothly and she is learning and not frustrated since we started Bigger. I am so thankful we have finally reached this point and HOD has helped to get us here. I am not so stressed anymore. :D :D

This is such a good question! I'm glad you asked it, as I am beginning BHFHG with my last ds, and I see the exact same thing you are describing. I also remember this with our sons back when they did BHFHG - the passages are deep and have multiple lessons to be gleaned. It is too much for the child to give pat answers to higher level thinking questions after only listening to 1 reading of the passage. According to BHFHG's Introduction, here is the purpose of Day 5's part of the Bible Study...
*Day 5: exploration of a Bible passage focusing on the Godly character quality

So, no, you are not doing it wrong in the least! I do the same thing. :D In fact, after reading the passage in its entirety, I have the Bible open so we both can see it and point to the exact verse the answer is in, letting him reread it out loud or in his head, and find the answer that way if need be. As 'exploration' of the passage is the focus, with paying attention to 'Godly character quality,' this is alright to do. It is not the same as the purpose being the habit of attention and oral narration without rereading or looking at the book while doing the activity. Instead, the Bible is meant to be seen as a resource, to look at, to use, and to explore in finding the answers to the Godly character focused questions. I look at it like a Bible Study group would look at it. Everyone would have their Bibles open and refer often to them in the discussion of the passage. I hope this helps you enjoy this part of BHFHG even more! :D

Julie

Julie,

Would the same go for Beyond? My daughter struggles answering the questions from the Bible in the Bible box, especially on the 5th day. I know some of the complexity is that we use the KJV, so the vocabulary and sentence structure make it even harder. She doesn't have issues with any other part of the guide (we are on Unit 24).

We use the KJV as well. I need to explain some things to Angie because of the wording sometimes, but she understands many passages and knows many stories from reading easy books and hearing stories in Sunday School and church. I'm glad Julie explained it. I don't want Bible to become frustrating. I think what she said would apply to any guide. :)

Hi StephanieU! :D Yes, psreit is right, it would be the same for Beyond, as well as for any guide where the purpose is the same as that which is described in BHFHG. :D I'm only a few days into BHFHG, so my thinking with what I shared was mostly in regard to Emmett and Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory, and partly from my memory years back from BHFHG with our older sons. :D HTH, and thanks you two for all of your help in helping other ladies on the board! So thankful for ladies like you!

In Christ,
Julie

Thanks Julie! Today we did Unit 23 Day 5, and she had no problem because it was a story she was familiar with (Abram and Lot). She actually remembered other things that I almost forgot that happen later between them (Lot getting captured and Abraham saving him). It is normally when it is a NT passage that is more wordy that throws her off. Nice to know that we are doing it right!

Julie, thank you for validating the method I am using. Thank you for the explanation of the purpose of Bible study. It is so fun to be going through Bigger the second time. I took LHTH and thoroughly completed each guide before starting the next guide. This has made Bigger so successful. Thank you ladies for your wisdom. I am glad to hear others have the same issues.
