Starting HOD in high school?
Starting HOD in high school?
Hello HOD families!
I have a question regarding high school. My children are currently in 5th, 8th, and 10th grades, and we are using MFW. I was looking at HOD for our next school year (possibly June) and wonder if it is feasible for my soon-to-be 11th dd? So far, she did Medieval with BiblioPlan in 9th (umbrella school labeled it World History) and is currently doing Geography with North Star Geography, mixed with some Mystery of History IV reading. This year has been overwhelming, to say the least. As much as we wanted to try to stick with MFW for her, it just isn't a good fit for her learning style. With that being said, where, if at all, can we start with HOD? I know they do not currently have an American/US History available, which is what she is missing for credit along with Government/Economics. Any suggestions? I was also looking at RtR for my youngest, and possibly World Geography for my middle. Thank you for listening and for anything you may be willing to share. God bless!
Blessings, Jackie B.

Right now the plan is to release a guide that covers Early American History for next year. Carrie has stated that they plan to release it in parts as they have done with the World History guide this year. They will mail sections to you time throughout the year in order for you to finish it in a timely manner. Those who have used the World History guide this way this year seem to be pleased with this. I believe this guide will include Government.

Another option would be to use Rev2Rev and MtMM for 11th and 12th grades. There are easy ways to beef up the history, mainly in the areas of economics and government.

Re: Starting HOD in high school?
Here is some advice that Carrie gave me for my high school son. This year he's in the 11th grade and just starting WG.

I was also going to recommend and will second Rev to Rev and MTMM for high school for your oldest child and then your 8th grader could complete them as well.
*For your oldest child, you would have that child complete the extension books.
*For science, she could complete the science listed in Rev to Rev and do the advanced book and then modify MTMM to make it high school worth with Chem 101 DVDs if that child hasn't completed Chemistry yet. Realistically, you could choose whichever HOD resource you wanted for science (or if you have your own, use your own) for these two years for the older child.
*I would contact HOD on how to update the English portion. They can help you better with how to move forward in this area.
*Math you would just continue on with what you were using.
*Some government and economics is covered in these two levels but HOD could also make a recommendation on what you would need to add in to fulfill that requirement.
As for your 5th grade, I would check the placement chart to see where that child lands.

Re: Starting HOD in high school?
Thank you for your helpful responses, everyone! I was just informed that the high school version of American History should be out in sections for this next school year, so I guess that solves my issue! I am now trying to figure out where to begin with my soon-to-be 6th and 9th grade children. Thank you also, Carrie, for all of the hard work you are doing for us families!

Re: Starting HOD in high school?
Have you had a chance to look at the placement chart for your kiddos, including the 11th grader? HOD is different than MFW and is skill based. The placement chart should help narrow it down. It is kind of fun to glean over, too .
