Was gonna use a different English but??..........

Post by we6rblessed » Sun Jul 13, 2008 2:45 pm

I have just purchase McRuffy Press 3rd grade for my 2 children. I like the spelling and English portion of it, but this also includes a lot of reading/comprehesion and poetry. It looks as if it will make "Bigger" take longer and step on its toes. There will be poetry in both and reading/comp in both, as I am using the Emerging readers before I go into the DITHOR. I do need a very strong phonics program for my 10yo ds, he is struggling with fluency. I dowant to solidify his phonics. I have Hooked on Phonics Master Reader too...If I am too heavy on phonics, its because I need to get him where he needs to be.
Maybe too much? :?
What are your thoughts?
Thanks ladies!
~Linda
PS:
I went with McRuffy, because we liked it so much last year, but that was not with HOD. I do like a workbook...but maybe should just do the Rod and Staff.

my 8 1/2 son is very weak on reading. We have him doing 2-3 pages of Explode the Code/Beyond the code (super cheap workbooks that are awesome) and then we do Phonics Pathways/Reading Pathways (amazon.com). Both are simple, fast, effective, and do not step on any HOD toes. All of that takes less than 10 minutes and has made a HUGE difference.

I plan to do this as well with my dd 8. She has improved greatly with her spelling, but is still a bit 'behind' according to her SAT scores. We will be using a workbook I was given a couple of days a week just to help strengthen her spelling. We also have some ETC workbooks, but I don't know what 'grade' they're for. Can anyone tell me how to find that information? :o

Hi inHistiming. The ETC books 1-4 are for grades 1-3, books 5-8 are for grades 2-4. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks, that is helpful. So, they just need to be placed in whichever workbook their ablities match within those 'grade levels'?

Linda,

I do think there is quite a bit of overlap in McRuffy and HOD. You may find it simpler to just add the Rod and Staff English or another English, rather than doing double-duty for reading, questions, poetry, spelling/dictation. :D

Otherwise, if you can pick and choose only those activities from McRuffy that you'll need ... that may work too. I'm not sure if that works with the way McRuffy is set up. Just a thought.

Blessings,
Carrie
