Moving fast in math okay?

My DS6 (Nov. b-day) is in unit 6 in Beyond. We've had some family health issues for the last 4-5 months, so school has been hit or miss. I guess we've hit math more than any other subject b/c I just realized he is almost done with 1B. Often, when we finish a math lesson, he begs to do more, so we just keep doing lessons until he gets the math bug out of his system. He has yet to hit a point that he feels challenge-- barely need to teach the concepts. So, is there any harm in just letting him zoom on ahead, even though he's so young? I'm wondering if there may be advantages to slowing down that I don't know about since this is my first time doing this. Any thoughts?

I've done the same thing off and on, had a baby, just did math and reading for a while, or something like that. I think it is fine as long as you are looking over the activities in the guide and making sure there is solid understanding of the concepts. A child might be able to speed through the workbook pages on "easy" stuff but it's always good to cement their learning with hands-on. Especially when you get to new concepts or things that are a bit harder for them.

We haven't been in the same place for math in our guide as we are in everything else in quite a while.

Once you hit the end of 1B you may want to go ahead and get the Bigger guide to have the hands-on activities for 2A/2B. Or use the textbooks and/or HIG to help give more practice time. Singapore, especially if you just use the workbooks, doesn't have a lot of practice built in so the activities or textbooks add to that.

I agree with Mel. I think it is fine to let them get a little bit ahead but doing the hands on very important. My 6 yo has recently finished 2a and I made her do the hands stuff each time she wanted to move forward. I think it is just that important IMHO.

Thanks for the reassurance! We always do Carrie's hands-on activities, even if we end up doing two or three in one day. Sometimes he doesn't seem to need them, but they sure are fun! :-)
