Can someone help me choose some books for my 10th grade son to use for his American Lit credit? We will be using BJU American Literature, but I want to add some full length novels to go along with it. I'd rather choose books that are not violent or dark. There must be some literature people here that have information on good books! I've been going around in circles on this topic and have finally decided to ask for help.

Thank you so much!! (Also, he is using MTMM this year if that makes a difference. Are there any books I can add from the World Geography guide that would fit well with American Literature?)

Moby Dick, Huck Finn, Scarlett Letter, and Portrait of a Lady. I wouldn't do more than 4-5 novels alongside the BJU. Also look up Any Novel Study. It is a pdf novel study that is 4 weeks for a novel and can be used with any novel.

If you are using MTMM this year for grade 10, then I would be more inclined to have your son do the literature from the World Geography Guide. Then, in grade 11, he could do the lit. from the World History guide; and in grade 12, he could do the American literature from the new American guide that will be coming out. The World Geography and World History Guides have enough British literature that upon completion of them both you can award a credit of Brit. lit for one of the years and a credit in Fundamentals of Lit. for the other year. Then, you'd award a credit in American lit. for his senior year.

The Grade 11 BJU American Lit. is very meaty. My oldest son did all of it alongside multiple novels in grade 11, and it was an honor's level course in the amount of work he did! We enjoyed it, but I would not do it with a 10th grader.

If your son hasn't already started a foreign language, you could also consider following the Spanish plans from the World Geography Guide along with MTMM. The World Geography Guide uses Getting Started with Spanish, which would be a single book purchase linked here (scroll down to the Spanish): http://www.heartofdakota.com/hearts-for ... ckages.php

Then, your son could continue following the Spanish plans in the guides after that as well.

One other option you could consider would be using the Essentials in Writing from the World Geography guide also, since you'd already be using the Literature. If preferred, you can definitely use the writing program from MTMM (Write with the Best II) instead. Either writing program would work, and you'll only need one.
