R & S English - HOW??

How do you teach the lessons? Do you use the teacher's manuel and do the oral reviews and class sections? Do you let your 5th graders & up do it independently? How do you go about it?
I am considering using this & would appreciate any advice or help! I tend to feel I need to do everything as it is presented in teachers guides & then get all stressed, pressured, & bogged down. If indeed I AM to do it exactly as in teacher's manual then it just might be it is not for us.
I tried R & S back when my 15 yr old was in 2nd - 4th grade & finally quit. He didn't seem to get it at all. If I was right beside him helping him work through it then he did fine. When I walked away for a bit to leave him finish on his own, then he would have trouble. I just could not stay by his side the whole time. I had his two younger brothers to teach. I see NOW part of the problem was that it IS advanced & he might have done better at a slower speed.
Would like to hear how you teach or use this, please. Have 4 children & the youngest still needs a lot of my time. The 3 older have become quite independent in their schooling & seem to prefer it that way.
Thanks!

We have followed the pacing HOD suggests and found it to be more manageable. Doing some of the R & S English levels half-speed on years HOD guides have this pacing planned as allowed us to complete R & S English successfully through the years. Carrie's suggestion of doing a good portion of it orally/on marker board, and reserving just 1 section to write in a composition book, has also helped. We are halfway through R & S English 7 with our oldest ds who just completed the HOD WG guide, and it has been an outstanding teaching tool through the years - not only for 'grammar,' but also for writing across all the subject areas. Time well spent. :D
