Preparing...question about History Project on sample week

Ladies, I have been looking at the Preparing sample week more closely in order to make a schedule for the new school year. As I was looking, I realized that I do not understand what to do with the History Project.

We are supposed to be making a shield with a coat of arms. On day 1 we cut white paper into a shield shape and sketch symbols on it. On day 2, we color the symbols, and then cut them out. So...are we supposed to keep the white paper that we cut them out of? Is it just a practice paper to see how the symbols will look on a shield?

Later we take those symbols and put them on another shield-shaped paper. So, I'm thinking that the point of the white paper is to see how the symbols will look on a shield-shaped object.

Help?

Motherjoy,

The point of the shield-shaped paper in the beginning lesson is to make sure that the symbols that the kiddos sketch will actually fit on their shield later. It provides a sort of boundary for the size of their symbol making. :D
