Wow! Thanks, ladies. I don't remember ever being allowed to retake tests. I went to Cedarville University in the early to mid 90s, taking Bible classes, science classes, and high math classes. I don't even remember being allowed to use notes at Cedarville, and all tests were done during the class period (even though every dorm room had a computer in it).

In high school, to my knowledge we were never allowed to retake, and I can remember just fewer than a handful of times being allowed a cheat sheet only (for tests where you would need to know a bunch of formulas). Either I don't remember very well, or times have changed.

Most of my son's mistakes on math tests are unrelated to his understanding of the material.

Debra,
Cedarville is actually where my dd goes so yes I guess it shows how times have changed. She did just tell me there is a difference between quizzes and tests. She said it is quizzes she is allowed to retake and that she has only had one class where she wasn't allowed to retake the quizzes, some of them she can take 3 times. The tests are online often, but those she can't retake. She is often allowed to use her notes on tests and quizzes.

For us, I have to keep a bit more documentation through high school and not b/c of college either. My 9th grader is going to play high school sports at a local school which is an option for us here. So I have to turn in each quarter a report card with her grades and each semester a transcript with her credits to show she is academically eligible for sports. They do ask for the classes in progress and our grading scheme so I will have to show how I derived at her grade. It makes me a bit nervous but I plan to turn in the intro as our classes in progress and grading scheme when we get back from vacation and meet with the athletic director. I have heard that after you turn those in at the beginning of the year that you are just turning in the grades you assigned on a report card and then the transcript each year so they have something to show the state athletic board should they be asked. Hopefully all will go well at the meeting (really they just have to approve the paperwork I turn in) and then we will spend the winter cheering for the soccer team and dd! :)

Tidbits,

I want to encourage you that we have had very good feedback from families who have had to turn in their grading plan for the courses within the World Geography guide. We even had a lady email us last year after her meeting with her principal and tell us that he shared with her that he really dislikes homeschool families because their plan for grading is so scattered. He told her he never approves of homeschool plans the first time they are presented. Then, he spent over 2 hours going through her World Geography guide, the Introduction, Course Descriptions, Grading, daily plans, and materials. He said he had never seen such an organized plan with such clear grade requirements and course descriptions. He approved her plan for the year on the first try and said her child would be receiving a stellar education using these materials, and he was impressed with its thoroughness. :D We pray your meeting will go well. I encourage you to go armed with your entire guide, all of your books and materials, as well as a copy of the entire Introduction (including grades and course descriptions) and first week of plans to leave with your principal. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

I just want to thank you all so much for this board! I have consulted the search bar many times and always find wisdom from Carrie, Julie and all the fabulous mamas! With high school beginning for my oldest this fall, I am trying to get my end all figured out. These posts on grading and transcripts are gold. So appreciative!
