High school history problem?

Can anyone give me advice on my situation?
My son will be in grade 11 in the fall. We just finished our first year with HOD, with him completing the World Geography guide. He had no difficulty in any of the assignments. I am looking at the fact that he has 2 years of high school left and he has not studied US History since about 5th grade. I love the looks of the World History guide coming out, but he really does not need world history. I have almost come to the decision to use the guide for the Bible study and the hymns and art study. I have several resources I could pick from for U.S. History -- preferring a 2-year study over a 1-year study. He doesn't really want to study the pilgrims again (but does not really remember anything about the Revolutionary War or later, except in a very general way), but has not ever studied the 20th century in detail.
My biggest addition to this problem is my 11-year-old, who will be studying Res to Ref next year. He doesn't really want to do this program because he did the Middles Ages online program with Veritas Press the year before last (did CTC this year) and thinks he knows everything already. But I own the Res to Ref already and I know he'll enjoy it, so I'm not too worried about that. Except that he SAID he wants to learn about cowboys and going west and inventions (i.e., the 20th century). And I CANNOT combine in any way my 6th grader with my 11th grader -- I cannot see that going over well in any way.
I had thought about trying to beef up MtMM for my oldest - using BJU United States History (2nd half of text) and the MtMM extensions for history. I would keep the English and literature from the World History Guide. Then my plan would be to move him in to the 3rd high school guide - Early American History next year, Lord willing, for his last year of high school. There are other books from the World History component that I think look really, really good and I am sorry for him to have to miss those, but that is what it is.
My older son is careful, meticulous student. He does well on all of his assignments, but he is a slower reader, as he has visual difficulties (20/20 in one eye, 20/200 in the other, noncorrectable, so he fatigues easily with reading). And as so often happens, my younger reads and processes in hyper-speed it seems like, and could probably read faster than the older if sharing any books. Science and math are not a concern, as we are using other resources for those.
My mama's heart really WISHES I could combine these 2 in the same history period of study - without any competition.
Question: Will my older feel/notice "a step backward" now, if I have him do MtMM with extensions, since he has already completed WG? (Although he will do some components of WH.
Does anyone have any advice for me on this situation? Any aspects that you see that I have not considered yet? It is almost July, and I need to make some decisions and choices very soon!!
