My 6 yr old is really struggling with reading! She has never shown much interest in any sort of academics. I had to force her to listen to picture books or color or count or any of that.

We are making our way slowly through LHFHG. But I didn't go with either of carrie's choices for phonics. She knows all her letter sounds (except i which she always confuses with e). She can read CVC words fairly well-kinda depends on the day. But phrases or short sentences-total breakdown in her abilities. She just makes up words when we try to read sentences.

I would like to ditch our current program & go with one something more suited for a slow learner. My first was slow to read also but one day it just clicked so maybe I need to be more patient? But I really think we need a new approach.

I would recommend The Reading Lesson.

I second the Reading Lessons. It is really great and I think your dd can go at her own pace and really enjoy it.

I also recommend the Reading Lesson. I would consider what motivates her. Reading is hard work. So maybe make a sticker chart. After she reads her 2-4 pages of the Reading Lesson cheerfully she gets a sticker. Never under estimate the power of stickers for little ones. I also give stickers on math workbooks and any other workbook we have. When completed neatly, working cheerfully you get a sticker. They like to put them on the front cover.

Great advice here already - so I'll just second it! I think you and your dd would really enjoy TRL with its CD, and find it's a total breath of fresh air! BOB books are also wonderful to get (probably can be found inexpensively at your local bookstore)!

The Reading Lesson is working great with my 2nd child. My 1st child really struggled with reading as well, and we took about a semester long detour from TRL and did Hooked on Phonics K and 1st grade books. It was just the boost he needed to keep going through TRL. He flew through it after our semester long pause and is now reading the emerging readers. Sometimes, I think it can take awhile for their brains to mature to the point of grasping reading. HOP has an app that might be a good intro to reading to make it interesting for her.

I was a reading specialist and I want to encourage you. This is NOT unusual. She will learn in her own time. Many are not "ready" at 6. My 8 year old still struggles. I would HIGHLY recommend All About Reading. It is the best reading program I have seen.

I am another who would suggest TRL. My oldest son is a delayed reader, however after doing TRL at his pace he has just finished reading Owl at Home. He will struggle with reading for awhile yet but that foundation has been so beneficial to him.
