I was just looking through English 4. My daughter is about to finish English 3 and we will move right into 4. It seems that there is a lot of review. Has anybody already figured out how far into the book before there is anything "new"? I think we can skip some but just wondering how much? :). She's on the older end and I don't want to waste time.

Its' review but it also adds stuff and gets deeper each lesson. My oldest flew through 3 with no troubles really, but she's been struggling a bit in 4. I wouldn't skip any... maybe do two lessons in a day if she knows all of it? Do it all orally?

It does seem like with Grammar in general that it naturally has review built into each level similar to how math also has some review. Review isn't bad. And it definitely does get deeper each level. I also wouldn't skip. If you are feeling paniced on time and you want to speed up the book, you could probably do lessons every day in grammar rather than every other day (if you are in a level that has grammar scheduled every other day). Or you could double up on lessons each day. But I would not skip.

One thing I personally experienced recently is how it does take effort for kids to learn, understand and remember. I actually work from home part time as an accountant for a smaller business and then as an adjunct accounting professor at a University. Well, I am in the middle of teaching a corporate finance class. Let me tell you - it is deep! For every class I teach I have to personally read each textbook. That is daunting in itself! My brain hurt so bad from this book specifically - reading it, taking notes, working the problems - I honestly had to keep taking breaks. So, I now know how my kids feel learning new things! My finance book had hardly any review and all of the topics are deep. The calculations alone can make you dizzy. I had to just spend some time looking things up separately and review some principles.

So, I share my experience because school is a lot like this. Kids need a bit of review. So with R&S, I would welcome the review. No need to make your child's brain hurt for when you dig deeper.

Thanks for that reminder! I'm usually the one telling people not to rush things and it's okay if it's review, everything doesn't have to be a challenge! Then, I forgot...:)
