Not going to finish MTMM this year...advice?

Post by easnave » Fri Apr 18, 2014 5:46 am

First of all, this is our first year with HOD and we LOVE it! It's been a huge blessing to our family :D

My question is similar to mtoback's except we are in the MTMM guide. We will not finish it by the time our summer break starts in June  We just finished Unit 20 and may get through Unit 24 before break. My daughter is 14. She'll be 15 August 28th and I'm considering next year her 9th grade year. What I am thinking about doing is finishing up the remaining Units next year which will take us through Thanksgiving, then the rest of the year focusing on English and science (Perhaps the Physical Science from Rev to Rev?) finishing up credits for those as well as counting the MTMM history as part of an American History credit. I hate for her to miss anything and I know going this route will have us miss the last year. But she is having difficulty getting all the boxes done every day. It has been a real struggle but I think we are FINALLY over that hump :D I'm not sure how well she can handle the World Geo guide at this point however . What do ya'll think?? Should I go with this plan or push and stress through World Geo next year...which I am exited to get to just sure it will be too much for her right now  Any Opinions?

If she is now hitting a good stride with MTMM I would think you would not want to skip over any of it, rather keep going and finish it up during the fall semester. Maybe add some additional things to see if you can fit in a credit or two there, using some of the ideas from the "beefing up for high school" thread. You could take her whole MTMM and if you do some of the add-ons use that for H.S. credits if you like. Or not worry about it.

I would think though you would want to start the WG guide no later than January, rather than taking a whole year with MTMM and some hodge podge (unless you already know what that will be). Then half a guide January-May, take your summer break, the other half in the fall semester. Full credits there for everything in WG.

That's just my thoughts off the top of my head. Again, unless you're sure you can make that spring 2015 semester meaningful without a guide, I would have difficulty doing that myself so I would just keep going.

I will say this - I have read several things from HOD that say if your child is ready for High School level work, then you could bump her up. I know this was my first year with HOD and some of the skills that were the hardest for us to accomplish were the skills of working independently and getting in a grove. If you feel like she has mastered that and things are very smooth sailing, and you feel like she is ready, then you could bump her up.

But it really does sounds like she is very well placed currently. If you want to use this for high school credit, then I would start looking what you would need to do bump it up for high school credit. I would see about adding in the extensions and have her read a few other books that were recommend in those threads. You could also add in a finance class or an econ class next year because those two items were to be added in the final guide. I would also try to have her study all 9 genres before the end of next year if you plan to use this year for part of 9th grade. The once nice thing about bumping up the difficulty level for this is that maybe you will finish your year by mid spring. And then you can start the WG guide a little bit early and that would be her 10th grade year. Just a thought.

Either way, you want your dd to enjoy school, learn a ton, and not be overwhelmed. So I wouldn't worry about her being "behind" at all. I would just assess where she is now and use that as your starting point. Also - one other thing (and I don't know if you do this already) but you could always have her work 5 days a week instead of 4 if that is possible. That would get you finished with each guide more quickly. Then you could finish all of this guide and all of the future guides. But think for us, we will be using that 5th day once my oldest starts High School. I think we will need all 5 days as I don't know if we will be able to get 7 hours of school in each day with other activities we have planned. Spreading those 28 hours a week over 5 days instead of 4 seems much more realistic and calm for me.

Thank you so much for your advice! That helps :D The only thing stopping me from purchasing the WG guide mid year is funding. But I'll keep praying. A miracle may occur! Thanks again!
