I have a 14 year old son who is going to be starting high school next year, and I am looking at using Revival to Revolution. We love HOD, and have used both Bigger Hearts and Preparing Hearts in the past. My son has always struggled, though, and after starting CtC we quickly realized that something was going on. The independent readings were frustrating for him and we were both so exhausted. He was finally diagnosed with dyslexia, processing and working memory issues, and ADD. This school year he has been working with an educational therapist, concentrating on comprehension and phonics.
This has been an odd year working on random things and trying to get his reading where it needs to be. He is ready for some structure and was excited at the thought of doing HOD again. My concern is that he will not be able to read as independently as he should for the level of guide he should be in. I would like to place him in Revival to Revolution for 9th grade, but I know he will not be able to do the extension packs. The amount of reading that would be required would be exhausting. The program itself, without the extensions, seems like a good fit for him. I love the science choice, and the history readings will not be too much for us to read aloud together. He has been working on memory skills this year and has memorized the presidents and states and capitals, so his interest is definitely there too.
My question is, will Rev to Rev be ok to use "as is" for HS credit? He will be starting video-text algebra, since he is just finishing up Pre-Algebra this year with MUS. We have just started Rod and Staff 6. We have never been successful with DITHOR because of his reading struggles, but plan to start that this year. Writing will be outsourced probably. Does this sound ok for a 9th grader with learning disabilities?
Thank you for any input you can give! I love HOD and hope that it will work for my son! It's a little overwhelming thinking about High School.

I have a son with some challenges also. He did MTMM this year and we decided to count it as 8th grade even though technically he should be in 9th grade. We don't do extensions. When I talked to Carrie about the possibility that down the road we would change our minds and need to count this year as 9th grade she assured me that he would be fine with the history doing it as is and it could count for high school. What I think is important to look at is how long is the work taking him. Due to your sons dyslexia I would think that he will spend easily 120 hours on the history portion of Rev to Rev, even without the extensions. If he does that then yes it is a credit. Public schools meet students where they are learning wise so this is no different. In all other areas you should be set. For science you can do the Advanced Exploration Education. The reading is not much and it is considered high school credit worthy. If you do DITHOR as well as Rod and Staff 6 and outsource your writing then that is definitely and English 1 credit. You have math handled. The only thing you might look at is Bible. You might want to use a different bible program that is a little more at high school level.

Re: Rev to Rev for 14yo with dyslexia? Need advice
Thank you Lynn! I had not considered that HS credit could be counted based on the hours that he spends on the work. That is very encouraging, because I do think it will take him that long. I didn't think about Bible needing to be more though. I will look in to supplementing that. We are part of Community Bible Study, so maybe his teen study will be enough to add.
I loved reading about your son's school work on your blog. It sounds like our boys are alike! Thank you for sharing.

Carrie has mentioned this to me several times as well, and I agree whole-heartedly. There is much meat to HOD guides, and this is just fine, especially as the entire left side of the guides through MTMM theme around history. History is enough of a part of the day that it can count as high school when doing the upper guides like RevtoRev and MTMM. I think you have a good plan for your ds, and I am excited for you to get back to enjoying HOD!LynnH wrote:...When I talked to Carrie about the possibility that down the road we would change our minds and need to count this year as 9th grade she assured me that he would be fine with the history doing it as is and it could count for high school...
