I know there are several threads on this already because I just got done reading them all....and my head is spinning, lol! If someone could offer exact ideas I would really appreciate it. I love all of carrie's choices for the books that I want to find similar things. My child will be doing res. to ref. for 9th through world geography for 12th. My child is bright and will be attending a four year college for reference on ability. I just wish we would have used Hod much earlier. Thanks so much I advance for holding my hand through this. I am a bit nervous about high school.

Edited to add that we have no state regulations for homeschooling in our state. Not sure if that means the same as high school graduation requirements or not???

So, the first step should be to see what your state requires for science and history. Some states are specific on course titles while others are not. But for history, I can see these titles:
9th: 1 credit Ancient World History
10th: 1/2 credit Modern World History, 1/2 Credit American History
11th: 1/2 credit Modern World History, 1/2 Credit American History
12th - 1 credit World Geography.

You will need to add in government and economics possibly, and these would most likely be done in 10th and 11th (see the beefing up posts for what to add for those 1/2 credits). I think the HOD guides (with extensions for 9th-11th grade) would be enough for the history credits.

Then you have science. Honestly, I would think using the items Carrie has picked would be easiest. You could do IPC for 9th grade, PACE Biology for 10th, and then chemistry in 11th. I think Carrie might offer options for 12th, as it is just listed as advanced science so far on the scope and sequence.

Next is math. I would again use what Carrie suggests unless you have something picked out.

Finally, there is English. Again, I would look at what Carrie has planned for the highs chool guides. DITHOR can be used for 9th and 10th (again see the beefing up boards), but I think by 11th you will want to use something Carrie has planned for high school.

The electives would depend on what your state requires:
foriegn language, fine arts, physical education, health, etc. Since graduation requirements are set by the state, you can use what HOD has planned for Bible or beef it up. It also depends on what you do outside of HOD (co-ops, Bible study, classes, extra curriculars, etc). Often these electives are fulfilled with those fairly easily.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post. So you think I should do the science in the upcoming high school guides rather than adding things to the current guide's science? Sorry if that seemed obvious. Thanks!

There was a discussion about that recently. The problem with the science in the middle school guides is that it doesn't meet most state requirements. The topics are:
Earth Science
Physical Science
Introduction to Chemistry and Creation vs Evolution
Then the World Geography guide is Integrated Physics and Chemistry, which is also often called physical science. And you want to do physical science before high school level chemistry.

You could do Biology in 9th (with RtR suing PACE Biology that Carrie is recommending for the World History guide), then physical science in 10th (either beefing up what is in Rev2Rev or using IPC), and then Chemistry in 11th (again either beefing up MtMM or using what Carrie plans for Chemistry). Then at least you are basically sticking with what is planned in the guide. The physical science in Rev2Rev (advanced option) would work as is if you wanted to do that, but I think IPC would be more challenging and hence a stronger course if she is interested in the sciences.

And on MtMM, I would still do the Creation vs. Evolution things personally (unless you have another way of covering that). I think that is VERY important before college, especially if she is considering a secular university.

Thanks again. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your time in writing this all to me. I am still a little confused but would really like to understand. I am confused by this paragraph:
You could do Biology in 9th (with RtR suing PACE Biology that Carrie is recommending for the World History guide), then physical science in 10th (either beefing up what is in Rev2Rev or using IPC), and then Chemistry in 11th (again either beefing up MtMM or using what Carrie plans for Chemistry). Then at least you are basically sticking with what is planned in the guide. The physical science in Rev2Rev (advanced option) would work as is if you wanted to do that, but I think IPC would be more challenging and hence a stronger course if she is interested in the sciences.
Here are my questions:

To clarify, you mean that in RtR I would sub the Biology science from the upcoming World History guide?

What is Rev2Rev science that you mean when you say "IPC"? I like the idea of a stronger science course so would love to know more about what "IPC" stands for, please.

Any ideas on beefing up the Chemistry other than waiting for the high school guide to come out with the Chemistry suggestions?

I am so excited by all your help! I am feeling close to having science figured out!! I was wondering if you had any personal specific suggestions on the literature aspects and the Government/Economics, and anything else I might be missing for high school? Thanks so much!

IPC is Integrated Physics and Chemistry. It is what is scheduled in the World Geography guide.
As for chemistry, I am not sure what is best. We have a long way to go, but I am also already considering letting my kids take Spanish and the physical sciences at the local community college where I teach. So, I haven't looked at those closely at all. But, Carrie will have that planned next year, as it will be in the first American History guide. So, you would know what she recommends before you would need it.
On the "beefing up" posts, Carrie and others mention Spectrum Chemistry, Apologia Chemistry, and DIVE CDs.

Thanks!! I apologize if you said this already but what science would I then use for the geography guide which would be my child's 12th grade, if I use IPC in rev2rev? That would be great to be able to have access to the college part of things. That must be very helpful. Thanks again!!

Physics, chemistry 2, anatomy and physiology, environmental science, etc. Carrie well have one planned, but she hadn't been specific yet. But it is also a great chance to do a science you daughter is interested in too.

Most state requirements are based on college entrance requirements (for example when I was in H.S. we were told our freshman year that if you just wanted to graduate H.S. you had to take this much science and math, but if you wanted to go to college, you took more science and math, plus foreign language, etc). Maybe you should contact some colleges that you might want your children to have the option of attending and see what is required on H.S. transcripts. You do need to create a H.S. transcript if you think your child will ever want to go to college. This is regardless of what the state requires. My state has very little requirement of Homeschoolers regarding records, but we still have to do H.S. transcripts if we want our kids to attend college (for them to even have the option of attending college at any point).

I hope this makes sense. That is why H.S. level credits become so important.

Thank you for all the help. Great suggestions and ideas. How do you go about adding to the science to make it high school credit level? Do you just go by the recommended age if the resource or is there something else to look for? Thanks!
