Ditch that. Pick this. Simple. Problem Solved.

As many know, I have been all over the place trying to figure out what to do with my rising 1st grader. Finally, I had a chance to show my husband the catalogs from my final two choices after narrowing it down. I just went back and forth with all of the "what if's" and "how about this" and so on. He looked them over and what took me months to come up with, he did it in 15 minutes. He glanced over the other, non-HOD guide and quickly came to the conclusion that it was weak in academics and skill-building (at least for our daughter's needs). He looked over the samples and said the program was only worth half the retail cost and it wouldn't be worth "that" because we would have to beef up too many things (math, phonics/reading, handwriting/copywork, spelling). He came up with this "Ditch that" scheme in about 10 minutes, whereas I'd been looking at this catalog for a few MONTHS   .

At this point, I was afraid to hand over the HOD catalog because I just knew he would tear it to pieces (figuratively). I really didn't want him to see the cost of the upper guides because he is pretty frugal...well, really frugal ;-). I reluctantly handed him the catalog as we sat on the park bench, hoping the kids' laughter as they played would put a soft spot in his heart as he looked at the HOD catalog  .

After a few short minutes, he said, "This is easy. Pick this one." Huh?! 8) So, just like that? He told me that HOD will give our children a competitive advantage in college and beyond. He said it looks like HOD is everything he would expect from a solid curriculum and the other looked like an underfunded private school curriculum in comparison. My husband loved the fact that children are placed according to their skill level, which, as he stated, is the single best way to place a child. He did a mental calculation and said he didn't mind paying more for HOD! :D :D He said HOD was truly an investment and worth every penny. (This came from a man that calculates the price per egg in a carton. ) He told me there really was no comparison and he giggled when I told him how long I'd been going back and forth on a program for our rising 1st grader. To him, it was very simple. "It is fair trade. You get what you pay for, and I want the very best for our children's education," is his philosophy.

Therefore, problem solved :D .

So you are doing LHFHG or Beyond?

And I agree - the price of the high school gudies gives me some sticker shock, but knowing a large amount is non-consumable really helps temper that. And we might not do EVERYTHING with HOD, but instead use community college classes for some science, foreign language, etc. But still, when I look at HOD, it is so strong in everything, which is what we want for our kids.

Don't you love it when our husbands make it easy on us? I was using another curriculum earlier this year and became very frustrated with it. I was considering finishing out the year with what I was using, and then switching to HOD in the fall. My husband looked at the HOD catalog and said, "Why wait?" He felt it wasn't worth my frustration and my son's frustration every day for the rest of the school year when we could be happy now. I'm so glad we switched when we did. You will love HOD!

Love your stories, Ladies!

Stephanie, that is next on my agenda to present to him. My little one had to go potty so we had to leave the park LOL...I hope he can help with that since he has fresh eyes. Currently, I am planning to buy both, Beyond and Little Hearts w/first grade option. I have another one coming up after this dd so if we don't use LHFHG in its entirety, it's ok :-).

My husband just did that for me today :-) I have been highly considering switching my kids from RightStart to Singapore. My challenge is that some stuff is just taught in a different order - both are Asian math so concept is the same - but just a little different order. So I have been feeling like RightStart has just gotten to the point is no longer such a good fit for my oldest. I want to finish the level but some of the concepts are very abstract. A wonderful homeschool mom just finished using Singapore with her kids as they are all going into Junior High. So I went to her house today and she gave me the student textbooks for 2A through 6A! What a great gift! I brought the books home and my hubby looked at it for about 10 minutes and said - make the switch! I am pumped and love that our wonderful hubbys and they are such a blessing us as homeschool moms!

Praise the Lord! :D :D :D This was just plain fun to read! I am sorry for the angst before the park date with dh, but now what peace you can feel. :D I am excited for you to move forward with HOD with joy and delight... and with dh's full support emotionally, mentally, and financially! :D What a blessing!

In Christ,
