Writing Program placement for Rev to Rev?

Post by sltress » Thu Feb 20, 2014 11:47 pm

My son will be in 7th next year and I am considering starting him in the Revival to Revolution guide. That is where we will be in our history rotation. However, we have not done the writing programs listed in CtC or RtR so should we do the Creative Writing book as scheduled in Revival or start back with WWTB 1 or Medieval Lessons? Will he be behind if he doesn't do these other writing programs first? He has had some paragraph and outline teaching this year through R&S 6 and he does Ok with his written narrations. He knows how to put his sentences in order and for it to flow to support the topic sentence. We haven't specifically focused on doing a "descriptive narrative" or a "persuasive narrative" and the like. Thx for any input you have.

We are coming back to HOD after 2 years away. We too are picking back up with Rev2Rev. We are just jumping in with the writing recommendations for it and not stressing the writing completed prior to it. I don't think it is necessary to have completed the writing in CTC and RTR if you place in Rev2Rev. :)

Thx Tidbits... but in MtM the writing is WWTB 2. Since it sounds like you haven't done WWTB 1 yet either do you think you will do that in place of WWTB 2?
In looking at the TOC of WWTB 1 it seems like some of the same subjects are covered in the Creative Writing book but I am not sure.

The creative writing program is a good program, however I do believe the assumption is there that the dc have already learned many things you mentioned through the use of the 2 writing programs that come before it. Since it is creative writing it is very different from the more structured writing in Write With The Best 1 and the more formulaic writing in the Medieval History Based Writing lessons. Since you mentioned that your ds has not had specific focus on a descriptive narrative I think if it were my dc I would have him do WWTB volume 1 with Rev to Rev. I do think this might prepare him better for WWTB 2 that is in MTMM. You could always do the creative writing program over the summer if that is something you think he needs work on.

Thx LynnH---that was my initial thought too. Would you pick WWTB 1 over Medieval History Writing to do first? Since I only have 2 yrs before starting the World guide (Rev to Rev and MtM) I didn't know if I should do WWTB 1 and then 2...or...WWTB 1 and Medieval and skip WWTB 2. I like the idea of doing Creative Writing book over one summer.
Oh why, oh why did I leave HOD??? :)

I would not worry too much about this. I think if you pick up with the Creative Writing program, you will be fine. You'll have WWTB 2 next year in MMtM and then an excellent overview the first year of HS with Essentials in Writing. We did WWTB1 but not very well during CtC (we muddled through the best we could during a tumultuous year) :?. Dd did RtR's Medieval writing with IEW and learned organization from it but nothing that couldn't be deducted in later years. My advice...just enjoy HOD the way it's written with Rev! I think that is the beauty of HOD...you can relax and enjoy knowing that it is has been carefully written to guide you and your child in a balanced year of education!!!

On second thought, have you considered skipping REV and starting back with RtR? That has been our favorite year and you would get some heavy-duty writing that year?
Currently:
dd 16 AH1 -bits & pieces (previously used Bigger, Preparing, CtC, RtR, Rev, MMtM, WG, WH)
dd 12 REV (previously used LHTH, LHfHG, Beyond, Bigger, Preparing, CtC, & RtR)

Thx mamanlait--yes and then there is the part of me that just wants to do the guide as it is written, like you said. :) I may just start there and see what happens. The book is really cheap and so if it isn't going well I can put it aside and get WWTB 1. We are doing RtR (MFW) this year and so, even though we would take advantage of the writing skills in RtR (HOD), we wouldn't want to redo the history period.

Thx all!
