My dd, who has dyslexia, has seriously struggled with math. When we met with an educational consultant last year, she put her in a special numeracy system to help give her number sense. She has improved in her math skills, although she is well below grade level. She is back in a traditional math program. I have come to accept the fact that she may always struggle in this area. She is doing very well with simple addition and subtraction using a number line or other objects. She does not have her facts memorized. I just wondered what methods have been used to help your dc memorize the facts, other than flash cards.

We have had and so has a friend, great success with the math items found at Child 1st.

Have her "teach" someone the math she needs to learn. I have dyscalculia and had major problems with learning math until I started "teaching" it.
Surely one of her older siblings would be glad to play student. Teaching, with encouragement, could help.

There are also many math games, if you could find the right one for her.

We use http://xtramath.org/. It is the best online math fact mastery program I have seen in my many years of homeschooling, and I've looked at a lot. And it's free!

Thanks for all the recommendations. The math struggle (I guess you call dyscalculia) is severe with my dd. She has made some progress this past year, but she is well below her peers. I'm just looking for extraordinary ways to try to teach her math and make it stick. The special programs and techniques given by my educational consultant seemed to 'bring down the wall', but she came to a point where I felt she could move on to something more traditional. But, now it is about learning facts. Right now, it is just addition and subtraction. We haven't even gotten to multiplication yet. Should she be very solid in the addition and subtraction facts before she moves to multiplication?

Mamamindy - I actually set up with xtramath last year sometime. I forgot all about it. I'll have to look at that again. Maybe doing something on the computer will help.

I will keep these ideas in mind. Any other suggestions are welcome.
