So I've read several threads on here that say there are no doctrine issues etc... with HOD and that very little needs to be changed in order to be used for Catholics. But then on a Catholic board I was on, someone wrote the following...

Which has me a bit nervous. Have any of you who are Catholic using the program run into any of these issues? I come from a Protestant background actually, so it's sometimes hard for me to judge what may be truly contradictory.

Carrie's foundation when writing these guides was the Bible and what her family's personal Christian beliefs and most on this board believe to be doctrinally true according to the Bible. While there are other Catholics using HOD, if any (Catholics or non-Catholics) have a problem with the materials, they need to make a personal decision as to whether it is a fit for their family. I don't think it is in this board's best interest to be pointing out anyone's personal negative opinion toward HOD. If you have general questions about using HOD, feel free to ask. As far as doctrine, this is not the place to discuss any disapproval of such. I say this in love. It is a personal decision. This board is to encourage one another, and we want to be an encouragement to you as well.

Well, I know this is probably isn't what you are looking for either but I come from a Non-Denominational and a Baptist background.

If you come from a Protestant background, you may find no issue. I am not sure why the person who is Catholic said that she found issue. But with every book you read - personally or to your kids - you always have to weigh whether or not you actually agree with what the books states. There are very Godly people whom I respect who have written books and they have come to conclusions in their life that are very different than mine. So I take everything with a grain of salt.

As for Grandpa's Box, it is just an overview of the Bible. Since it is an overview and in Story form, you are using it for learning the history, not really doctrine. JMHO though. We have thoroughly enjoyed it. And in general, I have been extremely happy with HOD and how it intertwines the Bible with the lessons. And everything they bring forth is straight from the Bible.

I am not posting my question with the intention of getting into a discussion or debate of doctrine. Nor am I trying to insult Carrie's hard work or paint HOD in a negative view, I personally think HOD looks beautiful. However, as a Catholic, I have to be careful in what I purchase for our family. Since this board is open to both general and specific questions, and since I know there are Catholic users on here who are able to answer my questions, I have posted my concerns. My desire is to know if the "issues" such as that person reviewed, are perhaps just her own personal and perhaps biased views, or if other fellow Catholic users have run into similar issues. I understand that the majority of the users on this board are Protestant, but with respect and love, I think it is fair to be able to expect to be allowed to ask fellow Catholic users, if there is a conflict in doctrine or not. It gets far too expensive to keep buying curriculum, just so I can read through all the materials, to see if they will work or not. That's the beauty of having boards like these - it saves time and money that are both lost in constant trial and error. Also, if some of those things mentioned are actually "issues", then hopefully there will be suggestions given as well, from fellow users, on how to work around them, so as to be able to utilize a great curriculum.

I noticed that many others have asked questions about Catholic issues/usage on here, and I noticed that everyone has responded generously, and without offense, despite different backgrounds, recognizing that while there may be differences in doctrinal beliefs, we are all sisters in Christ.

Thank you. I tried to do a preview of the book on Amazon, but they didn't offer one, so it was hard to tell. We're doing LHFHG right now, starting Beyond in July. I love the looks of the Bible in Beyond, with the memorization, the gentle discussion/application questions, and my son loves the gross-motor activities that go along with the Bible lesson.

I am not Catholic, but I do know Carrie does give a heads up about one book in I think RTR where she says that if you are Catholic you might not want to use that read aloud. It would be very easy to substitute another read aloud into the slot and it wouldn't hurt the flow of things at all. In the older guides it would also be easy to substitute a bible study of your choice in to the bible study box.
