HOD vs BJU

Hi! We are more than half way through our first year of homeschooling. I am using BJU with my 1st grader. I am pretty happy with the math and phonics part of the curriculum. I would like to use HOD because she is an advanced reader. I also like the idea of living books. Has anyone ever combined the two different curriculums and it work out? Ideally, I would like to stay with Phonics and Math BJU and do the rest HOD. Hope this makes sense. Thanks!:)

I haven't used BJU, but we are using Horizons for phonics and math right now. And it works just fine. Carrie wrote the guides so you can easily use your own math and phonics. You can even use something different for grammar. It just means there is a tiny bit more work for you to schedule the pace.

If you're using something that works for you in math and phonics, I would encourage you to keep using it. I have always a different math other than what HOD recommends. No problem.

Have you looked at the placement chart yet to determine the guide you'll be going with?

Welcome to the board! Many moms use a different phonics or math program than what is recommended in the guide. That is one of the beauties of HOD - it has that flexibility. Up to this point I have always used different math, reading and language arts resources than what is recommended with no problem at all. As someone else mentioned, be sure to check the placement chart to get started in the right guide. :)

Glad to hear that it is so easy to supplement curriculum. So excited to start her in Beyond in the fall. Thank you all so much for your help! :)

talli1,

This is basically what I do. I use BJU math and science with my son who is doing Beyond right now. The science is great in Beyond but my son is very math and science minded so I use the science in Beyond and also BJU's science because we have the distance learning videos with it. BJU's phonics is good but we use All About Reading for phonics/reading.

As you can see using your own math and phonics won't affect your use of HOD in any way.

I hope you enjoy HOD as much as we do.
