How can I run several guides smoothly? Update :)

Post by heidip2p » Tue Dec 17, 2013 9:27 am

Our family has recently switched to HOD. We are so thankful to have found such an amazing program for our family. Now I am looking for some help in ironing out our wrinkles. :)
We have 8 kids from 1yr to 14yrs. This is our 8th year homeschooling. The last few years have been a challenge. With adding to our family each year and me being tired and what not it has been an uphill climb. Now our family is complete, 8 is great :)! Now I am working really hard to get our days in a nice flow. Which is slightly crazy with this crew. :) If you have run multiple guides I would love to hear any ideas on how to make this all work. After trying to combine for so many years I am convinced having each in their own guide will work better. SO here goes.....

Our 9th grader is using WG. She is in week 8 and doing really well. Her days take about 8hrs. She gets distracted fairly easily but never complains about the workload. She is really happy with HOD. We are using everying with the exception of MUS Algebra for math.

Our 7th grader is in week 18 of MFW ECC. She is doing this mostly on her own and doing very well. She really wanted to finish ECC before switching. She is working so well independently that I know when she switches to MTMM she is going to soar.

Our 5th grader is in week 2 of CtoC. He can get quite easily overwhelmed with work. I was concerned how CtoC would be for him. Much to my amazement he is doing FANTASTIC! I think being in his own guide, moving at his own pace has been huge for him. Grammar is a bit of a struggle for him. He is using everything HOD recommends except using Horizons for math. I really wanted to switch him to Singapore but wasn't sure where to start.

Our 3rd grader is using BHFHG. He is in week 8. He is doing well. He does a few boxes on his own. We are also using All About Spelling for him and First Language Lessons 2/3. If I can catch him in the morning we can knock out quit of his day. He is up at 6am each day raring to go. :)

Our 1st grader is using LHFHG. He is really bright. He loves to learn. Most days I feel like I can't keep up teaching him. I am using All About Reading for phonics. He moves really quickly through his day. He loves art and spends most of his free time creating masterpieces.

Then we have our 4 and 3 yr olds using LHTH. I have a hard time getting this in each day. It is a beautiful program and I want to use it. Some days I just run out of time. Our 4yr old loves to do school. He knows most of his letters and sounds. Our 3yr old is not far behind.

Then we have our 1yr old that is so much fun. She loves to hang with the kids. She is a super easy baby which has been a welcomed change. :)

So how can I make all of this work? I have made reusable assignment sheets for the kids to follow. This has helped them and also at a glance I can see what has been done at any time. I guess in a lot of ways things are already running pretty well. I just think they could be better. So if you have any tips to share on running multiple guides I would love to hear them. So sorry for the novel. :)

Just wanted to share a quick update. We actually ended up splitting everyone up and it is going SO WELL! It is amazing and exhausting. :) We are getting so much done each day. Yet we still have time to do the fun activities along the way. I am so proud of the kids. We really found the curriculum that truly fits our family. It was a struggle at first. Far more for me I think than the kids. I had to let go of not being able to teach them all together anymore. That was tough. Really tough. I know there are moms that make it work beautifully. It wasn't happening for us. The kids are still very much involved in what the others are learning. Yes, art projects get drawn out a bit longer due to everyone wanting to join in. It is all part of the fun. I wanted to quit several times when we first started. It was a big adjustment. Now I am seeing the kids grow and blossom in such incredible ways. I am so very thankful for HOD.
It's in my signature but just in case here is our lineup.
V 9th week 14 WG
J 7th will start MTMM in April
A 5th week 4 of CtoC
G 3rd week 11 of BHFHG
P 1st week 11 of LHFHG
Q and E week 3 of LHTH--taking it slowly

My advice is to do with your olders the things they need you to help them with (any semi ind work) then while they are working you could do any work your Bigger child does not do independently, and then while they are all doing ind work you can quickly get done with the LHFHG work. If one of the olders finishes before you get done they could do some of the LHTH work (reading the lesson, working the worksheets, etc) with the younger ones.

And don't worry about not getting to LHTH every day. They'll get what they need.

You seem like you already have a lot of good stuff going on! So I am not sure what kind of tips I can offer and maybe some of the others who have done the higher guides will be more help to you.

I have heard and tried to take it to heart that planning your little ones' day is more important than the older ones. So I try to have things for my toddler to do and ways to keep him amused which cuts down on interruptions.

We review memory verses and discuss them over breakfast. Then I give my oldest a little time and get her started on some independent stuff. But there are so many ways to do a schedule, with the boxes you can do them in practically any order so I really mostly try to organize it so that things that are harder and things we don't like as much come first, or there's a hard thing, then an easy one, then a hard thing. With my DD I have a whiteboard with a checklist for her of things to do on her own (sounds like you have something similar). My Beyond and LHTH obviously do everything with me so they do not check off their own stuff.

I don't do LHTH every day either. I do it when I can. It is taking 2 years this way which is a good thing. One thing I did was do it right before her nap time, which is generally one-on-one time with her anyway. Little brother goes down for a nap first, she gets about 30 minutes of playtime, and then we do LHTH and she goes down for a nap. It was easier for me to fit it in there, for me all my other kids are already done with school and I found it hard to fit it in during my busiest school time. Of course, some of yours are doing school all day and I suppose the afternoon/nap time may be a good time for you to focus on them. Another thing you could do is have one of your olders do some of LHTH with the youngers, if you have someone responsible enough and who would want to. It might be a welcome break for them. Of course, I enjoy doing LHTH with her and I do want to have that one-on-one time with her.

Just some ideas. Things I have tried or thought of trying.

HATS OFF TO YOU - I think it sounds like you are doing great overall! :D :D :D I am teaching 3 guides, but I only have 3 dc, so that is still easier by far than what you have going on. I'd say the top 3 things I can think of that will help...
1) Have teaching blocks and independent blocks set up, so you know who you are with and when you are with them, and so they know that too
2) Have 1 midpoint meeting time with each of the older dc to do your teaching and check their work
3) Have each of your older dc take a turn playing with the youngers and teaching a few boxes or almost all of LHTH to the littles

HTH, but does this bring up any more specific areas of need? I'd be glad to delve more into those with you too - just post and let me know what you are thinking! :D

What a fabulous update!!! I so understand what you mean about having to give up the idea of combining. It is a hard one to let go of.

That is WONDERFUL!!!! I am so glad it is working out for you! I also came from another vendor where everyone is combine. And I know many moms who combine and so well. NOT ME! I only have 3 but they are all being split as well. It is so nice having them split up and with this program, they are learning more than I could have ever hoped for :-) So glad things are going well for you too.

Congratulations, Heidi!!! Great job on making this work for everyone!! :D

I'll add as well, that we have 5 guides running at our house! ;) The way HOD guides gradually work students toward more independence each year really helps a mama keep all those plates spinning! I absolutely love that I'm still involved in even my oldest one's day. I work with each child at different times during the day, and the older's are able to do their independent work in between those times we meet together. I can't believe how much we're getting accomplished each day, even while doing five guides!!

Just wanted to thank you, Heidi for the encouragement that you are to everyone! :D

WOW! :D :D :D This just did my heart such good to read! Heidi - you really deserve such credit for being willing to try out several different things until you found a great fit for your family. We do 3 guides, and I agree that our kids share so much with one another. It still is family learning, just not everyone all together for everything every moment. We have so much time together, I like having some special 1 on 1 time with each child for school. They like it too! :D One thought - if it gets too much at any point due to unforeseen life events (i.e. health, parents, etc.), you could always have your MTMTM and your BHFHG dc go half-speed for awhile in their guides. Then switch them to full-speed, and the other youngers (not 9th grader) to half-speed for a bit. This has worked in our home when my Dad became very ill - hopefully you'll have no need to do so. Congratulations on doing a super job with your family!!! :D :D :D I am celebrating with you today, Heidi! :D
