The Beauty of Correct Placement

Post by mothermayi » Tue Oct 29, 2013 7:09 pm

Sorry for hogging the board but I am just too excited about beginning this journey with you all :D . My ds11 had such a hard time narrating with our previous program and it often ended in tears. He felt defeated and often made comments about not being smart. His self-confidence spiraled down the toilet as we continued reading the history spines. He couldn't narrate the selections and he required a LOT of explaining and summarizing from me. I later found out that the spine was a high school level book used in a program for 2nd-8th graders (he's in 6th)   . Wow! It made sense after I figured that out...that's why he had so much trouble! Well, we are in CTC and the books are PERFECT!! He is narrating, understanding, making connections, developing intellectual questions, and most importantly, he feels capable, confident, and smart :D ! Today, he literally jumped out of his seat and yelled "I DID IT! I AM GOOD AT THIS!" Thank you HOD for helping my kiddo realize his true potential! And just think, we just began :) . I'm a happy mommy! :D

That's a very encouraging report!! Your excitement and your son's enthusiasm are contagious! Good for him, and good for you for making a tough decision that is paying off for your family.

That's wonderful to hear. The books in CTC are not easy to narrate from so if he is able to to do that then he is doing a great job.

I am so happy for you & him!

Carrie's guides are so very age appropriate and reach children where they are at. It is a true blessing. As you are finding it also helps them be successful & builds confidence. Praise God!
Thankful for Jesus Christ, my DH, our four children, and homeschooling. Homeschooled since 2007

Awww! That is so sweet. What a horrible thing... to have school make you feel inadequate. Urgh. HOD is inspiring. May the rest of your year be a pleasure and delight.

You are so right! Dc's ability to narrate well is based largely upon their ability to actually understand (and hopefully enjoy) the book they are reading! This is one reason why it doesn't work well to combine very large age ranges of dc together. What a good reflection you have had on this!
