Placement questions

Okay...I have been reading some past posts and did a search for "dyslexic" and nothing came up...trying to see if there are families out there with dyslexic children learning with HOD...I have a 6yr old boy, 9yr old girl (dyslexic) & an 11yr old girl. We are looking at possibly choosing HOD and I am trying to figure out where I should place all 3...my 11yr old learns fast and has been ahead a little bit when it comes to all her studies but really enjoys hands on activities...my 9yr old struggles with writing, reading and spelling but is great with concepts, math, story telling & science...my 6yr old is a quick learner and is already reading chapter books, loves math and hands on activities, but is not a strong writer just yet. So I would love to have all of them working together with HOD. Can anyone offer suggestions on how or if I can accomplish that or not? Your comments are greatly appreciated!

Honestly, with the variations in writing and reading skills, I wouldn't recommend putting all three together. Although it is fine for them to sit in on the reading in the other kids' studies, you will either not be challenging one enough or doing things that are too hard for one. You might be able to combine the younger two in Beyond, but that is as high as I would put a 6yo (Little Hearts for His Glory is the other option for a 6yo). For the 11yo, look at Creation to Christ. This is the first in a four year history sequence, and it sounds like she would fit well there possibly with extensions. Have you looked at hte placement chart to see where they fit according to that?

Thank you for your time in commenting. I have spent some time placing my children against the placement chart and have realized that CTC is a great fit for my 11 yr old...even though my 9yr old places better in Bigger I am going to place her in Beyond with my son joining in with her when he wants...I feel like my 9 yr old having dyslexia might cause her to get frustrated with a new program and more reading...what is your thought about "Drawn Into the Heart of Reading"...is this required? Do you use it and like it? Again, thank you.

It sounds as though you have made a good placement choice.
As far as the Drawn into the Heart of Reading . . .
For my oldest who is mildly dyslexic I started him on the Emerging Reader's set and added in the supplemental titles to make it longer/more practice for him.
He should be done with them this Fall and I plan to try DITHOR with him in January. The Emerging Reader's set is listed with the Beyond products, and the schedule is in the appendix of the Beyond guide. That may be an option for your younger ones.
DITHOR is a very good program and I would probably do it with your 11yo. However, I would give her 6-9 weeks to adjust to the CtC guide before starting it.
Hope this helps some
Welcome to HOD!

Thank you! I will take your advice. I have changed curriculums before and have noticed there is always an adjustment period. I am looking forward to trying HOD. I have been floundering around trying to find something that fits our family and I am hoping HOD is the right choice. All of your help is greatly appreciated!
