Using Rev2Rev for High School

Post by faiths13 » Mon Sep 09, 2013 10:47 pm

Hi :)
I just started using Rev2Rev for my 7th and 9th graders last week (as well as one on LHTG and one on LHTH - loving it). I have read a thread that tells how to add in some things for high school for Rev2Rev, but it is a couple of years (or maybe more) older. So I wanted to make sure I get in everything I should be getting in for my 9th grader.

Also, I am wondering about science. We are doing the science, but not the inventor study (I forgot to add it in, and Im not really sure I want to now). I was thinking it just doesn't seem like much for high school. Any advice on adding something in? I was thinking about adding in Apologia Physical Science and just having him read the text and not do the labs.

Also, how the heck do I give him grades? Now that I need to start working on a transcript, I have no idea how to start grading the work he is doing. And is there maybe a form to keep track of grades that anyone recommends? I haven't ever really graded before. I always just go over what they did, have them fix errors, or help them to understand what they did wrong and fix it.

Thanks!

Is he using the Advanced version of the science? If he is then they say it is worth a high school credit. I think there are tests etc for that level. We only did the intermediate level. As far as grading it might help for you to read over the introduction for the Geography guide where Carrie gives some grading guidelines for all the subjects. Another thing you can look up is grading rubrics. I found some that I have modified for keeping some grades of the work my ds does, especially written assignments. Many things I give him full credit if he follows the directions, does his work neatly etc. As far as keeping track I use homeschool tracker and I know that not everyone wants something that complicated.

He is using the advanced version, but they dont seem to be doing very much. I will look at the Geography guide and see if I can read the introduction online. :D

I am not sure what day you are on in the science but they first have to build the projects in order to do the experiments. I have heard people complain about the advanced level taking tons of time. Are you sure they are doing everything they are supposed to? They should be doing all the computer activities and building the projects and doing experiments and for the advanced version they have to do things on the 5th day also. Maybe they just aren't far enough into it yet.

They have only done 4 days of science. My husband has been doing it with them. They mostly have done experiments and answered questions. I guess I am used to lots of reading for science.

Ok that makes sense and no in that part there isn't a lot of reading. It is very much a hands one experimental type of learning. The reading definitely comes in the inventor study. That is where my ds learned about many of the physical science concepts. As he read the descriptions of how the inventors tried the different things and what worked and didn't work it challenged him to really try and understand the science of what he was reading. The inventor study doesn't directly correlate to the Exploration Education, but throughout the year many of the same concepts are looked at and read about. I know you had said you weren't doing that so that might be why it seems light to you.

That's why I was thinking about adding in some other reading. I don't have the inventor study books and I don't want to add more cost on lol. That's why I thought about getting the Apologia because I can get the older version cheap. But I wasn't sure sure if that would be too much.
