He's Not Comprehening. Please Help!

Post by glperky » Sun Sep 08, 2013 5:33 am

I just started Bigger with my 7yo DS (8 in Dec.). This will be our first real year with HOD so I wasn't sure where to place him because he fell in Beyond and Bigger. I asked for help on here and got a lot of great advice. So, I went with Bigger, Emerging readers and spelling from Beyond. My DS loves to be read to. He would sit and listen to me read until the cows came home and then some. He has also always been good at narration. However, he doesn't seem to be comprehening the Histroy or Science in Bigger. He hasn't been able to narrate or answer any questions so far. So, I am wondering if we should back down to Beyond? I should add that we are doing Bigger 1/2 speed, and I am not sure he has gotten much out of it up to this point (end of Unit 2.). I need some quick help ladies, because if we should go down to Beyond, I would like to change tomorrow. Thanks!

If you have not used Beyond, I would recommend that guide if he is not comprehending in Bigger. My daughter loved the history in Beyond. She was 8 when we did Beyond. :D

glperky,

While it can take awhile to get used to the vocabulary, wording, level and style of the readings within Bigger, it is also good to keep in mind that age 7 is the absolute youngest age that we recommend for Bigger. For a 7 year old to thrive in Bigger, he/she needs to be very strong in all of the 3R's. With the fact that you were already thinking that you'd need the spelling from Beyond, and due to the fact that your child is 7 and is on the very youngest recommended age of Bigger, and is also a boy I would definitely think a move to Beyond would be wise. This will help him have plenty of time to grow into the level of skills needed for Bigger. :D

You are welcome to return any unused books from Bigger and apply them toward what you'd need for Beyond. Placement is so key that it is wise to work to find the right fit. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,

Thank you for taking your time to input. It is greatly appreciated. :D

Oh and thanks for the offer to return any unused books from Bigger. I have what I need for Beyond and will just hang on to the Bigger stuff! Your offer is one of the reasons I like HOD so much. Y'all are wonderful.

Beyond is so much fun! I am sure your DS will love it too. We are just getting started with my 6.5 YO and she loves the stories from American Pioneers and Patriots, and we are going to start Stories of the Pilgrims next week. I have actually learned a lot of American History that I never knew through doing these guides.

Narration is a tough skill! My DD who is 8.5 struggles in Bigger with the narrations sometimes, it was definitely shaky at first and now (2/3 of the way through) she is getting much better at it. Really, I am not a good narrator because it's not a skill I ever learned how to do. Beyond will help him grow in those areas so he will be ready for Bigger when he gets there.

We are in Unit 6 of Beyond with my 7yr, going on 8 next month. He is really enjoying it. I highly recommend it for a boy of that age.

Thank you. I am wondering if you add any thing to Beyond or are you doing it as written?
