T stands for Teacher. Means that your direct involvement is needed to complete the box.
S stands for Semi-Independent. The student can likely do parts of it on their own, after you get them rolling on it. You should stay close at hand in case they have a question as they're working.
I stands for Independent. The student can read the box instructions and complete the assignment on their own. You'll just follow up later and make sure they did it; ask any questions that are listed in the box to follow up, check notebooking assignments, or complete discussion.

So these are the recommended guidelines intended by HOD. There will be some children that need you a little more at the beginning, even for an S or I box as they gain the skills they need to work toward independence. This is especially true if you're new to HOD. There may also be some kids who are taking over some of the workload on T boxes before the guide is finished. Often in the last third of a guide you may want to consider having your child occasionally take over a T assignment, so they can get used to greater independence needed for higher guides.
