Using Guides with Extensions

I am concerned about continuing using the guides with extensions with my daughter who is going into the 7th grade as we approach high school. I would like to use Preparing with my two sons who are 11 and 9 and Creation to Christ with my 7th grader. I would like to combine them all in Preparing for the overview in World History but believe my daughter skill level and ability to work independently is above Preparing. However, I believe my son who is 11 could also do Creation with my daughter. Can someone provide some insight because I do not want my children to get behind as we approach high school. Thanks.

Have you used HOD before? Putting the two oldest in CtC is a possibility depending on abilities. Have you been able to check out the placement chart on the right side of the HOD homepage? That will really help you to see where they best fit. With a little more information about your children everyone here can help you with this. :)

I used Bigger a couple of years ago with all 3 including extensions with my older son and daughter but it was a difficult to use because all of my children were at different abilities. So the following year we did other things. I tried going by the placement chart but it still seems difficult to determine where to place each child. Also, last year was only our second year of homeschooling so I am still learning more and more about how they learn and their abilities.

Hi livedailey! :D With HOD there are multiple paths through high school that all work, so it depends on what would be right for your dd and family. I have a few questions for you. How has it worked combining all 3 together? Does it seem like dd is just naturally setting herself apart from the boys and ready for her own challenge, or do you (and do they) all just love working together and seem well-placed academically?

I did a comparison/contrast post about PHFHG and CTC, and would love to have you read it and share your thoughts on placement for your dc in regard to this information...
Comparing PHFHG to CTC in Skills:

You have some great options here. Your youngest ds, 9 yo, can do PHFHG no matter what (provided he is ready for that according to the placement chart, that is  ). Your 11 yo could join him in PHFHG. Your 7th grader could do CTC (or RTR if she places best there).

Or, your 9 yo could do PHFHG. Your 11 yo and 7th grader could do CTC.

I would be inclined to have my 7th grader do a higher guide if she places there. This is the age dc want to be treated more maturely, and have more independence, higher level discussions, dig deeper into Bible studies and devotionals, etc. Especially since she is a girl, and your next 2 are boys, I think having that time alone with your dd to address her changing body, emotions, maturity, faith, etc. would sure be nice!!! I guarantee you will be able to get more to her heart. What are your thoughts though after reading through some of this?

In Christ,
Julie
