Combining Jr/Sr High

My two oldest are going into 7th and 9th this fall. I have never used HOD, but will be using it for my two youngest (4&6 this fall). I was wondering if it is at all possible to combine my two oldest for history still. In my state (CA) they are supposed to have US & World History with geography and Government and I would also like to do Economics. So Im trying to get his transcripts to have what he needs basically. I was hoping to be able to combine them to make it easier and more affordable, but Im not sure if that is even a good idea for those grades.

Otherwise I was thinking of possibly using CTC for my 7th grader. I know there is an extension package, but is it just for the reading books? I have been looking through the catalog, but I wasn't sure what really beefs up CTC for an older student. Thanks!

My daughter is currently doing Creation to Christ and will work on it next year for 7th grade. We have the economy package, the history read alouds, and the extension books for older students. It has been a great first experience with HOD for my daughter and we are enjoying it so much!

Here is where there is a discussion for beefing up CtC for highschool: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5400

I know I was a little nervous picking guides for my children. Just take your time and ask plenty of questions. :)

It would probably easiest for transcripts for your 9th grader to just follow Carrie's high school guides. She has it all planned out for high school so that Geography, World History, US History, Government, and Economics will be covered. Of course that is the easiest way to make sure you have everything covered over his 4 year high school career, but you can certainly use some of the other guides, beef them up so they qualify for high school credit. There is a sticky at the top of the main board that has information in beefing up some of the lower guides for high school credit.

As far as extensions, they do extend the learning for older students by more reading and higher level activities to go with the history. Math and language arts are usually done at the older student's level. Here is a link to a little more about extensions: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13877

If you want to keep your 7th and 9th grader together, you might be able to do something like put them both in Rev2Rev this year beefing it up for your 9th grader. I know there are discussions about how you could follow a path like this one and be able to count credit for US History, World History, etc. I think the beefing up for high school thread that I mentioned before is the place to start. There are a lot of threads in there that talk about various ways that others are using some of the younger guides for high school. Where do both of your dc place on the placement chart: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php That might help in figuring out a plan.

Carrie is definitely the best one to help you figure this out, but this is one of her busiest times as she is just finishing up with Conventions and is finishing the writing for the newest Geography guide, so it might take a bit before she can get to your questions. In the meantime, I'm sure others will jump in and share their experiences. :D

Thanks for your reply :) I have been looking at all the previews for the high school guides, but I was counting on buying used, and I wont be able to do that. I guess one thing that I am unsure of is would the RestoRef, RevtoRev and MtMM count as world history and/or US history? If I can count one of those years as World or US, then maybe I can figure out how to use one for both. Sorry I am just really confused, lol.

7th and 9th--REV2REV
8th and 10th--MTMM
9th and 11th Geography
10th and 12th World history
Then the younger can just continue with the last two guides Carrie will be writing.

This is similar to what we are doing at my house to combine children. This year we did REV2REV. If you use the extensions for the older child, you can assign a credit in Early US History. I added A Noble Experiment for her 1/2 government credit. You can use DITHOR for literature. Here is a link for credit worthy books: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7765&p=56997#p56997 The science is credit worthy if you do the advanced (physical science). For MTMM you would add economics. You could do the science as is for the 8th grader, and Carrie has some ideas for beefing it up as an intro to chemistry. You would also have the option to go ahead and buy the geography guide at this point and use it for the literature and science for the older and use the MTMM history to combine both for history and Bible. That is probably what I would do. In 9th and 11th, they would do the Geography together, but the older would use the science and literature from the World history. In 10th and 12th...same scenario. On the main board there is a post at the top that contains various links about beefing programs up for high school.

After looking at the other options and showing them to my dh, we have decided to go ahead and try RevtoRev this fall. Yay! I am super excited. So I just need to figure out how to beef it up for high school and figure out what credits he will get. We are doing HOD for my two youngest as well, and the programs all just look so amazing! Cant wait!
