Science in the Geography Guide

I will be using MtMM for my son's first year of high school for the upcoming school year, combined with the science from the new guide. My question is: will I need the actual guide to do the science, or can I do without the guide? My plan is to use HOD all the way through graduation, but I would rather wait and buy the guide when I buy the rest of the Geography curriculum the following year.
Time is a rather critical element for this fall because of an upcoming move. It will take a chunk out of our school year, so I was planning on trying to get an early start on his 9th grade year this summer. However, the Geog. guide won't be ready by the time I was hoping to start. By the time the guide is out, we will be beginning our move/travel in which school will not be happening. So, I am just wondering if I can do the science without the guide. Will he miss something significant by not having the HOD guide?
I guess this is more of a Carrie/Julie question...
Thanks!
