How to choose dictation level

My son is nine and will be ten in December. We are new to HOD. We will begin using Preparing in August. This past school year he has completed and done well with Writing With Ease level 2. If anyone could give me advice about how to determine which level of dictation from Preparing I should use with him, I would be very appreciative. I feel like he could probably could handle level 4, but I do not want it to be too difficult for him.

I have read through the posts on choosing a dictation level, but I am still stumped. We are new to HOD this year, starting with Res to Ref. I have a 10 and 12 year old. They are excellent in all aspects of Language arts. The Teachers guide has 3 levels of dictation, and I am not sure where to start. Do I start at the lowest level and work my way up? It is a little confusing to me.

I would say start with the lowest level, and if they get that right, then move over a couple of pages for the next day, and so on.
What I did with my second DD who is really good at spelling and LA was I let her do several in one day. Basically I let her do however many she wanted to do in a day. If she missed one we stopped on that one. And that's missing ANYTHING. Spelling, capitalization, punctuation, indenting, ANYTHING. That way she still moved through the progression, she just did it at a faster pace. I knew we hit the right spot when she missed the first new one of the day. Since then it's been pretty steady.
I still find though with my oldest occasionally she'll have a burst where she will need to skip through faster. So with her if she has a month or so where she doesn't get any wrong then I'll bump her over a couple of pages.
