Reading question...

Hi,
My daughter is in DITHOR level 2 and is 8 years old. She is doing great as far as decoding larger words and the books are perfect for her as far as reading level and interest. The problem I am seeing is that she is either skipping or changing the smaller words in sentences when reading to me. It's the little words like the,of,in etc. Anyways, I have been having her go back and reread the sentence to correct herself. I don't want to frustrate her or discourage her but I am concerned that this is going on with silent reading and this changes the meaning in the story. Any advice on how to help her with this would be great

My daughter is also 8 and in DITHOR 2/3. She doesn't change words, she usually leaves out "so-and-so said" and she changes other words, usually into synonyms. I correct her or have her go back. I realize I actually do this in read-alouds also, I wonder if she has picked up on it. I don't have any advice for you, just wanted to let you know mine does it too!

I have an emerging reader dd and a severely dyslexic ds, and they both do that at times. It is most likely due to the fact that they expend a lot more mental energy and focus on the larger words that they sort of "skip over" any little word that they perceive to be "easy" and not worth the focus. This will improve. I only correct if it changes the meaning of the sentence significantly. Otherwise, I leave it alone. Also, reading aloud involves many more cognitive steps than reading silently, so it is very possible that this happens more with oral reading than independent reading. If she is narrating well and doing well with the DITHOR activities, I wouldn't worry at all.
