Possibly moving from PA to Asheville, NC...

DH is considering a position in Asheville, NC. I had hoped for TN, to be near my sister, who also homeschools. But we have always loved Asheville, too, and the hope is that the job would allow my hubby to be less stressed. I have heard some say Asheville is a difficult and dark area, spiritually speaking. I wondered if anyone here lives there, has lived there, has any comments, as we prayerfully consider all that a move would entail! Thanks!

Hello!
I live in Western NC 1 1/2 hour south of Asheville. We travel to Asheville every six weeks for some shopping (Earthfare, Sams Club, etc.)
We use some medical care from Asheville as well...
We moved here from PA- 1 1/2 years ago...
Where in PA are you located?
What type of job are you considering...
if you don't mind me asking... what kind of church do you attend?
We also took a job and moved...
There are many home schoolers in Asheville...

I grew up in Western NC, but don't live there now. I do know that Wicca has a huge following in the Asheville area and I've heard that there is a big new age movement there now. But on the other side of coin, I know there are a lot of bible believing Christians there too. Good luck with your research and decision.

I agree with Patty about Asheville area. Yes, it has its share of darkness, that's for sure, but there are some great churches and plenty of believers up there too. It is absolutely a *gorgeous* area, and tons of homeschoolers, and tons to do and see!
The other good news would be that NC is soooooo much easier to homeschool in than PA!
Blessings,

Thanks, Ladies!
Yes, we used to live in southwest VA and always always said we'd love to live in the greater Asheville area. I was offered a job there after college (I was a wildlife biologist---offered a position at the zoo!) but decided to stay on for a masters degree at Va Tech instead.
My husband found out about this position a couple months ago, and wanted to apply for it, but at the time it was to be located in Vermont, and I just really do not like the cold. He knew PA was far enough north for me and that I would be depressed in cold VT. I said I would move where he wanted, but that VT would be hard for us and I would rather move somewhere south of PA. Interestingly, the next day they told him they were thinking of moving the position to WV! So we kept thinking and praying about it. Well, the announcement officially came out last week, and they had moved it to Asheville, which was an extremely pleasant surprise as it gets us to the most beautiful area in the east! My husband has always wanted to work there, as it is ecologically so unique, diverse and beautiful. (we are both biologists--well, I am now a stay at home mommy).
Homeschool laws here in PA are not what I would call friendly. This coming year will be my first year to have to go through all their rules, and I would certainly welcome a move to a more friendly state. Plus, we are just not northerners!
My husband is an extremely loyal person, very loyal to his employer, and has a hard time imagining leaving, and justifying leaving when he has a good position, we love our church family, and he feels settled here. He has a strong desire to put down roots and so for him to have applied for something else is pretty huge. I still hold out some hope that we will be able to live in TN with my sister, but the draw for him is not quite as strong.
I just would love to have our family and my sister's family growing up together. But! Asheville sure it a LOT closer to TN than PA is! So, if anyone feels led to pray for this huge decision for us, I would appreciate it!
Thanks so much, I am guardedly excited!
