Thought I'd share a little good news!

This is where new posts begin. All questions or discussions about any of Heart of Dakota's curriculums start here. If you wish to share a one-time post about your family's experience with our curriculum, you may post under the specific curriculum title (found beneath this "Main Board" heading).

Thought I'd share a little good news!

Post by StillJulie » Wed May 15, 2013 10:09 pm

I've posted a few times regarding my family's decision to enroll in a virtual charter school for the upcoming school year. There is a trade off regarding more hoop jumping in order to make this work for us.

HOWEVER, HOD is now on the to be approved list! (meaning that I can use it for our core curriculum)

Also, I provided the director with a wonderful write up that Carrie has posted somewhere here on the board (don't remember what link took me to it) that explains the writing process throughout the guides. I'd been concerned that I might be required to supplement in some of the younger grades (possibly Preparing and below). After reading Carrie's write up, the director said that it looks complete on its own. That is a big praise for me b/c I really do not want to be required to include more "stuff" to our days.

Again, thanks so much, Carrie, for your wonderful, complete guides, as well as for your willingness to spend the time responding so thoroughly to the questions that are presented on this bulletin board. I appreciate you and your work so very much!

This is good news! I know this has been a trying process, and I am glad you are now on the other end of it and can just enjoy your HOD year now. :D I think this is the thread you are referring to (in case anyone else is in the same situation and may benefit from this link)...

Yep, that's the one!

I still don't quite feel "on the other end" of the process. The school board meets on the 20th of this month to accept the open enrollments. After they meet, I'll get a letter that I need to return saying that I want to accept those spots. Sometime after that I'll meet with another person from the school district to write up personal learning plans for five students, that include these core courses each semester (as well as any electives we choose):
o English/Language Arts(including writing, reading of both literature and information text,
grammar, spelling, vocabulary, phonics for younger students, speaking and listening)
o Mathematics
o Science (physical, earth, life and engineering & technology)
o Social studies (history, geography, government, economics, behavioral)
o Physical education

After that I'll prepare my order lists, which the school district will order. I have checked with HOD, and thankfully they do accept purchase orders, so it won't be a problem to order my HOD materials directly from HOD. Orders can also be placed through Rainbow Resource, Barnes & Noble, and several lesser known (to me) companies.

Then I'll need to drive about two and a half hours one way to pick up all my orders, hopefully in July so that I still have a good bit of time to get organized in time for tentative August 19th start date. I'll also have a technology/computer orientation, as I would be allowed up to five laptops for our use.
